Brno-Country District: Castles, Monasteries and Nature

Brno-Country District combines impressive castles, medieval monasteries, museums and protected landscapes. You can put together very different kinds of holiday days here: Pernštejn with its chambers and tower, as well as Veveří, which developed over almost eight centuries; the art and architectural history of Porta coeli; or paths along the Bobrava stream and the Svratka River. When choosing your accommodation, the key question is therefore whether you want to focus on culture, nature, regional history or a combination of these.

Castles, monasteries and special destinations

At Pernštejn, you can walk through the chambers and climb the tower. The castle has also been used as a filming location by film crews from around the world. Veveří offers a different historical focus: The castle developed over almost eight centuries and was substantially expanded under Margrave John Henry. Both places convey history not only through individual dates, but also through preserved rooms and visible phases of construction.

Porta coeli in Predklasteri was founded in the 13th century as a Cistercian nunnery. Its defining details include the richly decorated Gothic portal and the chapter house with a stone lectern. The Podhorácké Museum in the monastery contains four permanent exhibitions as well as seasonal exhibitions. The complex also includes a monastery brewery offering beer tastings.

The Moravian Literary Museum is located in the monastery at Rajhrad. The historic Benedictine library preserves 65,000 volumes. Rosa coeli was founded in 1181 for Premonstratensian nuns. During a visit, you can walk from the main nave to the preserved staircase; a guided historical tour is also available. The castle of Dolní Kounice preserves architectural elements ranging from the Gothic period to the Renaissance.

The Mining Museum in Oslavany displays a life-size model of a mine tunnel with a mining locomotive. The exhibitions cover geology, minerals, mining methods and the lives of miners. It thus complements the monasteries and castles with a distinctly technical and social-historical perspective.

Protected landscapes and trails

Bobrava Nature Park covers 30.90 km² and was designated a generally protected area in 1982. It lies in wooded terrain along the middle course of the Bobrava stream in the central part of the Bobrava Upland. Anyone wishing to experience tranquil landscapes alongside cultural attractions will find a clearly distinct focus here.

On Bučín Hill, small remnants of a medieval fortress mentioned as early as 1349 have been preserved. The Tišnovsko Route follows nature along the banks of the Svratka. Above Židlochovice rises Výhon Hill, with a lookout tower made of locust wood. Židlochovice is known as an apricot-growing area; the fruit comes from Výhon.

Getting there and choosing a theme

The monastery in Rajhrad can be reached from Brno by train. Railway stations are also located in the municipalities of Střelice, Omice, Tetčice, Silůvky and Radostice.
