Kovalovice: Stará Pošta, Natural Swimming Biotope and Cycling Routes

Stará Pošta is a preserved historic post station that was established in 1785 as a relay station between Brno and Vyškov and is directly connected with the Battle of Austerlitz. Visitors can tour the restored interiors of the post station and a small museum exhibition. This is where the discovery of Kovalovice begins, at a specific historic site that conveys history not only through dates, but also through preserved rooms and an exhibition.

Cycling in two clear directions

For active days, Kovalovice offers a route with a fixed length and two marked cycling routes in different directions. Cycling Route No. 5136 Pozořice–Velešovice passes through Kovalovice, follows Class III roads and is 5.5 km long. In addition, two marked cycling routes pass through the village: one runs north into the Moravian Karst, while the other heads south to the protected landscape of the Battle of Austerlitz battlefield. This gives you a choice between a 5.5 km route and two directions leading to different landscape and historic areas. The route with a fixed length and the two destinations therefore differ clearly: the former focuses on distance, while the latter offer a choice between the Moravian Karst and the protected landscape of the Battle of Austerlitz battlefield.

Natural Swimming Biotope, Multi-Purpose Court and Potočiny

The natural swimming biotope in Kovalovice includes a children’s pool and a beach volleyball court. The swimming biotope is located approximately 700 m from the Kovalovice Municipal Office and can be reached by following signposts or the yellow tourist trail markings. At the multi-purpose court in Kovalovice, you can play tennis, foot tennis, volleyball, small-sided football and basketball. This means that stays involving different interests also offer concrete options for enjoying the water, ball games and physical activity. The swimming biotope combines a children’s pool and beach volleyball court, while the multi-purpose court brings together a range of other sports. Fishing competitions have been held annually since 1995 at the Potočiny water reservoir, which was built in 1987 and 1988 and serves sporting and recreational purposes. Potočiny thus combines sporting and recreational use with an annual fishing competition that has taken place since 1995.

Local History and Living Traditions

The local history includes the Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul, which stands on the site of a former bell tower dating from 1826. Another notable historic complex is the former fortress complex from the mid-16th century. It was later used as a manor farm, school and inn, and today houses the Na Tvrzi restaurant and a cultural institution. The past and present-day use stand side by side here, without the complex losing its historic character. The chapel and the former fortress complex represent two different historic traces in the village: a former bell tower and a complex whose use changed several times.

The so-called Ruská kaplička is also located in the Stará Pošta district. It was allegedly built in 1851 by a Russian noblewoman after the Napoleonic Wars. One or two of her relatives, officers of the Russian nobility, are presumably buried there. The chapel was repaired in 1995. Its alleged construction in 1851 and its repair in 1995 mark two points in the chapel’s history. A local tradition of its own is the regularly held Petropavlovské hody festival, which also includes a traditional field mass.
