Kaly: Hiking, Cycling and Small Cultural Monuments

Kaly combines short cultural discoveries with marked trails through the landscape of the Brno-venkov District. The Křivoš Lookout Tower is particularly distinctive: it stands southeast of the village of Zahrada, a part of Kaly, on the eponymous 464-metre-high summit. From the lookout, the marked trail passes several notable small waterfalls on the Kalský potok stream. This means the hike can be viewed not only as a route to the viewpoint, but also combined with a section along the stream. For travel by public transport, the connection from Brno is as follows: take the S3 train and change in Tišnov to bus route 335 towards Drahonín/Olší. You can get off at the Kaly stop or at the Kaly, Zahrada stop.

Cycling Routes with Different Route Options

Kaly also offers several clearly described options for a cycling stay. The large PORTA microregion cycling circuit runs via Předklášteří, Dolní Loučky, Kaly, Zahrada, Štěpánovice and Lomnička back to Předklášteří. It is 16.00 km long; via Babylon Hill, the alternative measures 16.76 km in total. From Kaly, cyclists can continue to the Zahrada district either directly or via Babylon Hill. A shorter circuit is the Štěpánovice–Borač–Kaly–Štěpánovice cycling route, covering 7.71 km. The “Na Babylon” cycling trip is approximately 14 km long and leads from Borač, in the Vrby district, along an uphill forest path to the Babylon lookout above Kaly. Near Zahrada, the route can optionally continue to Křivoš; a descent to Dolní Loučky is then described. This allows you to choose between a shorter circuit, a longer microregion route and a tour with an ascent and an additional viewpoint.

Chapels and Monuments in Kaly and Zahrada

The central Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, dating from 1883, stands in the village centre. It is a state-protected cultural monument and stands approximately on the site of an old bell tower dating from 1834. A sculpture of Saint Florian stands in a niche above the entrance. Directly beside the chapel is a monument to those who fell in the First World War, made of Nedvědice marble.

Another small landmark lies on the northern edge of the village: an undated cast-iron cross stands beside a field path on a sandstone pedestal that is now badly damaged. The Zahrada district also has a Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, whose gable bears the year 1915 and which was renovated after 1990. These places provide several specific stops for a walk through Kaly and Zahrada, without the historical significance needing to be expanded with unsupported details.
