Dolní Kounice is a destination for travellers who want to experience cultural history not only in museums, but also at specific sites. Rosa Coeli, the synagogue, the Jewish cemetery, and Dolní Kounice Castle and Chateau offer different ways to explore the town’s history. There is also a viewpoint overlooking the town and a paved cycle path along the Jihlava. This makes it possible to combine historical discoveries with an active route during your stay, without limiting the trip to just one theme.

Rosa Coeli and Jewish history

The most important historical landmark is Rosa Coeli. The monastery was originally the oldest convent for women in Moravia. The Premonstratensian Order founded Rosa Coeli in 1181 not far from the centre of Dolní Kounice. This combination of monastic history and an urban setting alone makes the monastery a distinctive starting point for exploring the town.

The synagogue in Dolní Kounice offers a second historical perspective. It was built between 1652 and 1655 in the early Baroque style and is one of the oldest synagogues in Moravia. Guided tours of the synagogue begin every full hour during the monument’s opening hours. When planning a visit, it is therefore not only the architecture that is of interest, but also the specific format of the interpretation.

The Jewish heritage also includes the Jewish cemetery in Dolní Kounice, founded in 1680. The cemetery contains approximately 1,500 irregularly arranged gravestones. This unstructured arrangement immediately distinguishes the site from a strictly ordered cemetery and makes the gravestones themselves a defining part of the visit.

Castle, Chateau and Independent Exploration

Dolní Kounice Castle and Chateau were originally built to protect the monastery. Today, they offer guided tours. This provides another perspective from which to understand the history of the site: Rosa Coeli represents its monastic past, while the castle and chateau reveal their original protective function.

An audio guide was introduced for visitors to Rosa Coeli in 2019. Using a mobile phone and headphones, they could explore the monastery at their own pace. This documented visitor route differs from a guided tour and therefore offers a different way of exploring the site. Anyone who prefers to take in historical places independently will find a correspondingly different form of orientation here.

Viewpoint and Cycle Path along the Jihlava

In addition to the buildings, the Chapel of Saint Anthony is one of the distinctive landmarks of Dolní Kounice. The chapel offers a beautiful view over the entire town and the surrounding area. The viewpoint adds a spatial perspective to the cultural and historical sites: the town can be perceived not only through its individual monuments, but also as a whole.

The 4-km paved Ivančice–Dolní Kounice cycle path provides an active addition. It runs along the Jihlava River through a picturesque landscape and is intended exclusively for cyclists and pedestrians. This clear restriction on use is important when planning the day: cycling and walking are the focus on this route, while motorised traffic is not part of the route format described.
