Discover Cvrčovice

Cvrčovice combines distinctive historic buildings with a landscape shaped by the Jihlava River and Niva Jihlavy Nature Park. If you would like to combine culture, regional history and events with a river landscape during your trip, the village offers several different points of interest. The character of your stay is also important when choosing suitable accommodation: you may wish to focus on the historic village setting, nature along the Jihlava, or an event such as the Christmas market, the sitontop Cup, the Cvrčovický džbánek or the Cvrčovická neckyáda.

Church, Château and Historic Details

An important landmark is the Church of Saint James. It dates from around 1690 and is listed as a cultural monument. However, its construction history goes back further: in 1828, the church received a tower. In the 19th century, a Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre was added on the south side of the chancel; an oratory was built above this chapel in 1885. This makes it possible to trace the development of several historical periods through a single building.

Other prominent architectural monuments include the Cvrčovice château and estate complex, with its gate, farm buildings and administrative building. The entire ensemble is listed as an immovable cultural monument. The so-called Petersova vila, dating from the second half of the 18th century, is listed as a château under registration number 1186. Today, Petersova vila houses the Střední odborné učiliště Cvrčovice vocational school centre. A Baroque statue of Saint Urban dating from 1750 also stands in front of the cemetery gate. Cvrčovice is also home to a Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1734.

Events with a Local Character

The Odborné učiliště Cvrčovice vocational school centre holds a Christmas market every year. Visitors can view and buy handicrafts made by the students there. At present, the third round of the sitontop Cup takes place in Cvrčovice every year; the competition is open to the general public. Also open to the public is the Cvrčovický džbánek, a race for two-person teams in a rowing boat that has been held since 2000.

Another local event is the Cvrčovická neckyáda. It is associated with the Cvrčovická lávka and includes raft races. These events are distinctly different from a traditional cultural stay and may therefore influence your travel planning. When looking for accommodation, there is also a riverside campsite in Cvrčovice: it offers pitches for tents and caravans directly on the Jihlava, with a view of the Cvrčovický jez weir.

The Jihlava, Nature Park and Cycling Route

The Jihlava River flows through the municipality of Cvrčovice; a weir is located there at river kilometre 18.4. Niva Jihlavy Nature Park is also situated within the Cvrčovice area. The landscape of the nature park is shaped by the freely meandering Jihlava floodplain, fragments of alluvial forest, extensive riverbank vegetation, and two systems of former river channels and oxbow lakes. This is the only surviving area of its kind in the Brno-venkov District; in the South Moravian Region, it is one of three longer preserved sections of lowland rivers.

For exploring the area on two wheels, the marked Vinařská stezka Brněnská – Trasa Uherčice–Těšany cycling route runs through Cvrčovice. A particular testament to the area’s more recent infrastructure history is the Bailey bridge from 1946, which crosses the Jihlava in Cvrčovice. Thus, historic religious and secular buildings, a river landscape, a nature park and regional events all come together in Cvrčovice.
