Nové Bránice between Wine Region and History

Wine landscape as the first point of orientation

Nové Bránice combines the landscape of the Bobrava Highlands region with the character of a Moravian wine-growing municipality. The village lies in the Znojemská wine region; its wine-growing area includes the Staré hory vineyard site. The region’s typical gravel soils are particularly suitable for red grape varieties such as Frankovka, Zweigeltrebe and André. This gives Nové Bránice two different starting points for planning your trip: You can view the village through its highland location or through the wine tradition associated here with a specific vineyard site and characteristic grape varieties.

Hiking and cycling with clear route details

A red-marked hiking trail passes through Nové Bránice. The marking provides specific guidance for anyone who wants to explore the village on foot and does not want to base their choice solely on cultural attractions. Individual structural details have also been documented for cycling: A cycle path includes a 14.60 m-long footbridge over the Bukovina stream. The bridge is therefore one of the distinctive elements of this route, without implying a specific length or difficulty for the entire trail.

This should be distinguished from the project “Cyklistická trasa Ivančice-Dolní Kounice I, úsek Moravské Bránice-Dolní Kounice”. Its aim is to build a new, bidirectional cycle path with shared traffic for cyclists and pedestrians. The planned route is intended to be 4005 m long. This distinction is important when planning your excursions: the red-marked hiking trail and the cycle path with the bridge are described as existing local features, while this project aims to build a new connection.

History and visible memorial sites

The first written mention of Nové Bránice dates from 1306. At that time, the village was owned by the nearby Rosa Coeli Monastery in Dolní Kounice. This connection anchors Nové Bránice in the region’s older history, which can be understood not only through dates but also seen at several places in the village.

A bell tower stands on the site of the former cemetery in Nové Bránice. In front of the elementary school, a war memorial commemorates those who fell in the First World War. Another war memorial is located on Skalní Street before the entrance to Dolní Kounice from Nové Bránice; this memorial also commemorates those who fell in the First World War. These historical points of reference are complemented by the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It is designed as a polychrome, approximately life-size figure.

Nové Bránice can thus be explored during a stay through several themes: the Bobrava Highlands region, the Staré hory vineyard site, marked trails and individual reminders of local history. Families who want to combine different interests therefore have various starting points for planning their days, without reducing the village to a single attraction.
