Velatice – Natural Monuments, Cycle Path and Local History

Natural Monuments with Special Plant Life

Vinohrady is part of the natural heritage. The area was first designated a natural monument on October 29, 1981. Vinohrady is a natural monument that protects heat-loving steppe communities on rock formations made of Culm conglomerate, along with associated protected plant and animal species. This means that the focus here is not merely a landscape designation, but an explicitly protected habitat.

Another natural-history highlight is the Velatická slepencová stráň Natural Monument. It protects heat-loving steppe communities on Culm conglomerates. The rare flowering plants found there include the large-flowered pasqueflower, dwarf iris and Illyrian buttercup. These specific plants give the nature experience a distinctly different character from an ordinary walk without any particular connection to the landscape.

The floodplain of the Roketnice is also among the documented landscape features. A small pond was created there and was quickly colonized by amphibians. For a quieter part of the day, the recreational area created in 2012, with wooden sculptures and a view of the pond, is also a good option.

Vinohrady can be reached via a dirt track that forms part of a cycle path. The Podolí u Brna–Velatice–Tvarožná cycle path follows the old Imperial Road, combining physical activity with a historic road route. The cycle path can be used by pedestrians, cyclists, inline skaters, users of scooters and ski scooters, people with pushchairs, wheelchair users and electric bicycles. This allows you to choose a mode of transport suited to your plans for the day, without limiting your visit to conventional cycling.

Chapel, Festival Tradition and Local History

A prominent cultural landmark is the Chapel of Saint Anne. It was converted from an original bell tower and consecrated in 1909. In 1998, it was restored, enlarged and consecrated again. The building's history makes the chapel more than just a single photo stop: several dates document its conversion, consecrations, restoration and enlargement, as well as changes to its appearance.

The Anenské hody festival is traditionally held in Velatice. In 2026, the festival included a pilgrims' Mass in the Chapel of Saint Anne at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 26. This date belongs to the past event and does not describe a future date. Velatice's local sights also include an old water mill.

Archaeology also gives the village special significance: the archaeological term Velatice culture was coined בעקבות the discovery of a cremation burial in Velatice.
