Žatčany between Nature and Local History

Žatčany combines a locally focused nature trail with a protected sandy area and a remarkable ecclesiastical history. This creates a destination where nature observation, exploration of the village and Moravian culture complement one another within a closely connected thematic setting. At the same time, part of the municipality lies within the Slavkovské bojiště landscape and heritage protection zone, making the village’s historic surroundings visible as well.

A Nature Trail with a Local Perspective

The Žatčany včera a dnes nature trail forms a circular route of just under 7 km and includes 15 information panels. It is primarily intended for local residents, but also offers visitors interesting content. The focus is therefore not only on the walk itself, but on the history and development of Žatčany. The combination of the circular route and information panels gives your stay a clear local focus without reducing the village to individual sights.

Písky: Sandy Areas and Protected Habitats

The Písky natural monument is located in the cadastral area of Žatčany and covers 2.24 ha of protected land. It is characterized by loose sandy areas originating from former oil extraction approximately 50 to 60 years ago. Scattered woody plants grow among them, while denser stands of woody vegetation can be found along the edges. The area is protected because of abandoned spoil heaps and waste-rock heaps, as well as its role as a habitat for psammophilous flora and fauna. Psammophilous describes plants and animals that are dependent on sandy habitats.

For orientation, it is important to note that Písky is reached across pathless terrain. From the road, it is more than 250 m away. This information describes the access objectively and makes clear that visiting this natural monument is a different form of exploration from walking through the village.

Churches, Chapel and Historic Village Centre

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Žatčany is considered one of the oldest churches in Moravia. A church probably already stood here in the 12th century; masonry and supporting pillars from this early construction phase have been preserved in its foundations. The history of the church complex also includes the Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene. It was built in the Baroque style in 1616–1618 and, as part of the church complex, is a protected cultural monument. Inside are a wooden altar designed as the Holy Sepulchre and an artificial stalactite cave with a statue of the saint. The artificial stalactite cave is a designed element of the chapel, not a natural cave.

Another focal point is Náves, the oldest and largest historic area of the municipality. It contains the greatest concentration of monuments and public buildings. The tradition of Svatomartinské hody, the Feast of Saint Martin, has also been maintained in Žatčany for around 400 years. This shows that local history is expressed not only in buildings, but also in a traditional festival custom passed down through generations.

Cycling Routes and Historic Trails

In Žatčany, the Brněnská vinařská cyklostezka intersects with a locally signposted cycling route. The Bitva u Slavkova nature trail route also passes through the village. Other destinations within the same broader area are Úsuší Úsuší, Pravlov Pravlov, Zbraslav Zbraslav, Syrovice Syrovice, Trboušany Trboušany, Všechovice Všechovice, Hlína Hlína and Unín Unín.
