Discover Šlapanice

Šlapanice combines traces of history, protected nature, and marked trails within a compact thematic area. If you are looking for accommodation in the Czech Republic and want to combine different experiences rather than visit just one attraction, the town offers points of connection between culture, landscape, and regional traditions.

Between the Museum, Church Complex, and Remembrance Culture

A good introduction to the history of Šlapanice is the Šlapanice Museum. It is housed in a Renaissance scholasterie on the town’s main square. The scholasterie was built in 1613 and houses exhibitions on different themes. Each exhibition is supplemented by a play area or programmes for children. This makes it possible to combine a museum visit with discoveries for younger travellers without allowing cultural history to fade into the background.

One of the town’s defining buildings is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, “Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie”, the oldest and most valuable architectural monument in Šlapanice. The original Romanesque church probably originated at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century. The medieval church was surrounded by a wall with bastions and formed a fortified church complex. Another historical feature is the Stolpersteine, which are set into pavements in front of the respective properties at several addresses in Šlapanice.

The Šlapanice château also adds to the town’s historical character. It was built in the Rococo style as a country residence and dates from around the second half of the 18th century. During the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, it was converted into a French military field hospital. Traditional local events also provide opportunities to engage with the region’s past. These include a Masopust procession on the Sunday afternoon before Ash Wednesday. The events calendar also includes a wine tasting in Bedřichovice, held on a Saturday in April.

Nature on the Outskirts and in the Town’s Cadastral Area

The landscape around Šlapanice displays several clearly different natural settings. The Andělka a Čertovka Natural Monument covers 3.37 hectares on steep slopes above the right bank of the Říčka at the northern edge of Šlapanice. The Návrší Natural Monument protects heat-loving communities in the cadastral area of Šlapanice on Culm conglomerates, meaning habitats adapted to warm conditions. The Říčka flows through the central part of the cadastral area, including the town.

Velký hájek adds another type of landscape: the area is almost entirely covered by deciduous forest. Steep slopes, heat-loving communities, a watercourse, and an almost continuous stand of deciduous forest thus lie side by side. These differences make Šlapanice interesting for travellers who want to combine cultural sightseeing with walks and nature observation.

Marked Trails for Hiking and Cycling

For an active day out, a yellow-marked hiking trail begins in Šlapanice. It leads via Santon, Tvarožná, and Jiříkovice to Prace. Those who want to explore the area by bicycle can use the Slavkov Battlefield cycle path along the Sokolnice – Prace – Šlapanice route. The two routes have different focuses: the hiking trail connects several places along a marked sequence, while the cycle path explores the landscape of the Slavkov Battlefield on its own route.

When looking for a hotel or other accommodation in Šlapanice, you can therefore choose according to the mix you want to define your trip: historic buildings and a museum, natural monuments and forest, or a day on the hiking or cycling trail.
