Nebovidy: Church, Landscape and Village History

The Church of the Holy Cross makes Nebovidy a remarkable destination for anyone wishing to combine historic architecture with the character of a long-established village while travelling through Czechia. Its Late Romanesque core, Gothic chancel and Gothic sacristy from the 14th century are complemented by rare frescoes. The Church of the Holy Cross is mentioned in 1329, when it was elevated to a parish church. However, its construction history goes back further: the Late Romanesque core stands alongside Gothic parts, including the chancel and the sacristy from the 14th century. The rare frescoes give the building an additional special art-historical dimension. In 1996, the church was classified as a cultural monument of the Brno-venkov District.

Nebovidy’s written history also reaches far back into the past. The first written mention of the village and the name form “Nebowidi” are found in a well-known forgery of a deed of donation to Třebíč Monastery in Cosmas’s Chronicle from 1104. Nebovidy is also considered a typical example of a linear roadside village. The term describes a village whose buildings developed along a road. This gives the place a clear, elongated character that differs from a settlement arranged compactly around a square. Hill, Bobrava Valleys and Special Nature Observations

One of Nebovidy’s three significant landscape landmarks is the predominantly wooded Nebovid Hill. At 370 metres above sea level, it is the highest of these three landscape landmarks. Another defining landscape area is the deeply cut, wooded valleys of the small Bobrava River. They give Nebovidy a distinctly different focus from the historic village centre and make the landscape an independent topic when planning a trip.

For Nebovidské hody 2026, a procession through the village was announced for Saturday, 22 August, at 1:30 p.m. An afternoon event at 4:00 p.m. and an evening event at 8:00 p.m. with music by the Sobuláci group for listening and dancing were also announced. The festival was announced for 2026; this does not refer to a current or future event.
