Řikonín – Valley, Hiking Trails and Historical Traces

Řikonín lies in a picturesque valley along the Libochovka stream and combines a peaceful hilly landscape with trails, railway connections and an unusually rich collection of historical traces. This creates a destination where nature and culture do not appear as separate activities: forests, meadows and small fields accompany the trails, while chapels, crosses and the historic Balákův Mill offer insights into the history of the village and its immediate surroundings.

Hiking between the valley, forest and railway line

Řikonín lies on the left bank of the Libochovka. The landscape around the village consists mainly of spruce or mixed forests, meadows and small fields in the hilly countryside. A green-marked regional hiking trail passes through Řikonín. In the opposite direction, it runs via Chytálky and Pasník to Tišnov railway station. This means that orientation need not be limited to a single walk around the village; the trail connects Řikonín with other points in the region.

For a manageable hike, consider the walking route that reaches the railway line near Řikonín and is no more than 8 km long. Another trail leads through the Haldatal valley and combines natural scenery with historical traces. In the wider region, it passes an railway tunnel that, from 1943 until the end of the Second World War, was the last so-called C-Tunnel belonging to the production facilities of Diana GmbH. Also in the wider region, Sochorská skála can be reached from Kutiny via the green-marked hiking trail. This trail passes beneath a railway viaduct and crosses the Libochovka.

Chapels, Crosses and Balákův Mill

Among the notable cultural landmarks is the Chapel of Saint Giles on the village green in Řikonín, built around 1874. Above Řikonín there is also a chapel built in 1899 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Two crosses complete this picture: a wooden cross erected in 1949 stands beside a field path 300 metres from Řikonín; another wooden cross above Balákův Mill bears the year 1877.

The historic Balákův Mill, formerly Severův Mill, lies on the far side of the Libochovka from Řikonín and in the village’s immediate surroundings. A concrete mill race has been preserved at the mill. Its grounds originally contained a municipal pazderna, where the village herdsman lived. Here, the term does not refer to modern accommodation but to a historical part of former village life. Another historical reference is the place known as “U zabitého,” marked by a stone bearing the year 1795.

Railway Station and Orientation for Your Stay

Depending on whether you want to focus on the green-marked trail, the walk of no more than 8 km, or the cultural landmarks around the chapels, crosses and mill, Řikonín can be explored from different directions.
