Nosislav – Churches, River Landscape and Wine Tradition

Nosislav combines distinctive religious buildings, preserved traces of a water fortress and a unique river landscape along the Svratka. Anyone wishing to combine culture, nature and activity on their trip will find very different facets here: from the fortified Catholic church and historic monuments to the double meander with sandy beaches and gravel banks.

Fortified Church and Evangelical Cultural Monument

The Catholic Church of St. James the Elder is the only fortified church in the Brno-venkov area. Its fortifications feature a bastion at the southeastern corner, numerous loopholes and are 4 to 8 metres high. This gives the religious building an unusual defensive character that clearly distinguishes it from an ordinary village church. The Evangelical Church in Nosislav provides a different historical accent. The protected 19th-century building was constructed in the pseudo-Romanesque style and is regarded as a historical testament to the development of religion in Moravia. Since 1993, the church has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic; it is registered under number 8554. For travellers interested in culture, this creates a comparison between a fortified Catholic church and a 19th-century Evangelical building.

Traces of the Nosislavská Water Fortress

The Nosislavská water fortress includes several preserved and protected components. The protected monument complex includes the Gothic Tvrz No. 72, including its annex and covered entrance staircase. The most valuable lower section of the wall, a bay window in the house and a painted ceiling have also been preserved. The massive walls have a Gothic ground plan. Traces of a moat are visible around the water fortress, allowing the historic complex to be understood not only through individual structural elements but also through its fortification layout.

The Nosislavská Backwater on the Svratka

The Nosislavská backwater is one of the last preserved meanders on the lower reaches of the Svratka. There, the river has retained the character of a natural watercourse lined with riverside vegetation. The bend features a double meander, sandy beaches, gravel banks and steep, eroded banks. These varied riverside forms make the river landscape an experience in its own right alongside the historic buildings and give Nosislav a clear connection with nature.

Cycling, Routes and Local Wine Tradition

For cycling travellers, the “Po hranici parku” cycling loop is relevant: it passes through Židlochovice, Nosislav and Blučina. In addition, the Svatojakubská cesta runs along the left bank of the Svratka to the Boudecký Bridge. The two different routes thus place the town both on a cycling loop and on a route along the river. A culinary tradition is reflected in the “Otevřené sklepy Nosislav” event. Wine and Burčák from local winemakers are tasted there. The event traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in September from 12 noon. The wine tradition thus complements the churches, water fortress and river landscape with a seasonal event of regional character.
