Ivaň – Water Landscape, Cycling Route and Local Traditions

Ivaň lies on a river terrace between the Jihlava and Svratka rivers in the Dyje–Svratka Valley. Remnants of floodplain forests, wetlands and the water landscape along the rivers give the area a distinctive character. At the same time, the Brno–Vienna cycling route passes through Ivaň, connecting the tranquil landscape with a practical opportunity to actively explore the surrounding area.

Rivers, Wetlands and Protected Nature

The Jihlava and Svratka rivers meet in the cadastral area of Ivaň before reaching the Věstonická nádrž reservoir. Along the rivers and at their confluence, wetlands, marshes and several oxbow lakes form part of the local aquatic environment. This landscape is complemented by several protected areas: the Dolní mušovský luh natural monument covers 48.6 hectares in the cadastral area of Ivaň.

Betlém is also designated as a natural monument. The wetland covers 10.87 hectares and was created on the site of a former sand and gravel extraction area. Its former use is therefore directly connected with the history of this landscape area. Part of the Věstonická nádrž reservoir also extends into the cadastral area of Ivaň. The reservoir is part of the Natura 2000 Ptačí oblast Střední nádrž Vodního díla Nové Mlýny bird protection area and serves as a wintering ground for white-fronted geese, bean geese and white-tailed eagles.

The Rybník Vrkoč pond is also located near Ivaň. It covers 156.1 hectares and has approximately 5 kilometres of embankments. The easiest way to reach the water is via the road from Ivaň to Pasohlávky, near the guesthouse of the same name; from there, you can reach its main embankment. This precise orientation is particularly useful if the pond is a focal point of your stay.

Cycling Without Steep Climbs

The Brno–Vienna cycling route runs through Ivaň mainly along quiet roads away from the main roads and has no steep climbs. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether to focus on staying in the village, the cycling route, or the surrounding waters and natural areas.

Church, Wine Cellars and Traditional Festivals

The Church of St Bartholomew is part of the village's history. It dates from 1791 and was built on the foundations of an original chapel dating from 1724. It was substantially extended in 1811 before its tower was raised in 1842.

Wine traditions are also documented in Ivaň. Vinařský dvůr na faře includes a restored wine cellar that is more than 200 years old. The village events calendar also includes the traditional Bartolomějské hody in August, a wine tasting at Easter and the Staré hody in October. In recent years, the Staré hody have been organised by women. The draining of the Rybník Vrkoč pond has taken place on the last weekend of October for several years. Depending on when you travel, such events can significantly influence the character of your stay.
