South Moravia is a region for trips where wine landscapes, castles, caves and trails through diverse landscapes come together. The 143 km² Lednice-Valtice Valley is a cultural landscape in South Moravia. Its architectural, biological and landscape features have been shaped over time. Wine, cycling routes and historic sites

The Valtice Wine Salon is a permanent tasting exhibition of Moravian and Bohemian wines in the cellar of Valtice Castle. Valtice is also home to a wine museum, an educational trail through the vineyards and the Valtice Underground. For active days, South Moravia offers 1,200 kilometres of marked wine cycling routes through wine landscapes. The route system consists of ten circular routes and a 245-kilometre connecting route between Znojmo and Uherské Hradiště. It leads to historic towns, wine villages with characteristic cellar architecture, UNESCO heritage sites, folklore and Moravian wines. The Moravian Wine Trails can be explored on foot or by bicycle and are considered routes with generally relaxed terrain suitable for family outings.

Castles, churches and regional culture

The Pilgrimage Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary in Křtiny is a Baroque pilgrimage site. Jan Blažej Santini designed it as his largest building, based on a Greek cross plan. The armistice between France and Austria took place in the Historic Hall of Slavkov-Austerlitz Castle in 1805. Moravský Krumlov Castle is regarded as a place for picnics and disc golf. The Pálava area is home to the House of Nature in Dolní Věstonice.

Caves, protected areas and viewpoints

The Moravian Karst comprises around 1,100 officially discovered caves, five of which are open to visitors. It is considered the best-known and most extensively developed karst area in the Czech Republic. The Kateřinská Cave contains the country's largest accessible underground chamber; Balcarka Cave combines varied stalactite formations with archaeological and palaeontological finds. The Pouzdřanská steppe nature reserve lies above Pouzdřany and offers views of the Nové Mlýny reservoirs and the Pálava skyline. The Ždánický les is home to rare plant communities on its southern slopes, as well as wild boar and red deer.

Exploring trails and waterways

The section of the Stezka Českem long-distance trail through the Lower Moravian Valley runs through relatively flat terrain with little elevation gain and passes through Strážnice, Hodonín, Břeclav and Mikulov. The South Moravian section of the Svatoklementská pilgrimage trail is 25 kilometres long and can be completed in one day. The Baťa Canal offers recreational boating on a 60-kilometre waterway from Otrokovice to Hodonín. Along the way, visits to cultural sites, wine cellars, protected natural areas and a bird reserve can be combined. The Hardeggská vyhlídka leads to the Austrian border and offers a striking view.
