Chudčice: Discover the Stations of the Cross, Calvary and Landscape

Chudčice combines a distinctive sacred cultural landscape with the characteristic features of the Chudčická pahorkatina. The town lies on the edge of Podkomorské lesy Nature Park, making it suitable for travellers who want to combine historical points of interest with experiences in nature during their stay. The Stations of the Cross and Calvary as a cultural highlight

Above Chudčice there is a Stations of the Cross with fourteen Neoclassical masonry stations. The chapels of the Stations of the Cross were built according to a design by the architect Eduard Svoboda, who was born in Chudčice. The route is therefore shaped not only by its religious significance, but also by the town's history and a specific architectural figure.

The sacred history of the town also includes the Chapel of the Finding of the Holy Cross, considered an important local monument in Chudčice. The modern Chapel of the Finding of the Holy Cross was built in 1996 next to the Vrzalovy horky grove. In addition, the pilgrimage site of Tři kříže commemorates the former Chapel of the Holy Cross, which was demolished in 1784. Three stone crosses were erected in its place. The Calvary of Chudčice has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958.

Landscape between valleys and wooded hills

The landscape of the Chudčická pahorkatina is characterised by basin-like valleys, broad flat ridges and isolated hills. These elevations mostly consist of conglomerate and are referred to as “horky”. Travellers with children can connect such geological and landscape terms directly with the visible landforms on site, without limiting their stay to sightseeing alone.

The Kuřimka stream runs along the eastern boundary of the cadastral area of Chudčice. Another distinctive landmark is the Okno viewpoint, which forms part of the Na Kamínkách orchard. From there, you can look out over Veveří Castle, Chudčice and Veverská Bítýška. Visible remains of the former railway line from Kuřim to Veverská Bítýška have also been preserved in the town. This historical railway connection adds another facet of local history to the sacred monuments.

Cycle Route 5231, “In the Footsteps of Abandoned Railways”, runs through Chudčice between Moravské Knínice and Veverská Bítýška. The route thematically follows traces of disused railway connections, making it particularly suitable for an itinerary in which landscape and history are combined. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the cultural highlights around the Stations of the Cross and Calvary, or place greater emphasis on cycling and the landscape of the Chudčická pahorkatina.
