Discover Otmarov
Otmarov combines a fascinating local history with an open, gently sloping landscape and various opportunities for active or culturally oriented days. The village lies on a plain at an elevation of 188 metres; the surrounding gently sloping terrain rises to 205 metres. Together with the regional bus connection, the Chapel of St Othmar and the cycling opportunities, this creates a destination that combines nature, village history and relaxation.
Flat Landscape, Dunávka and Cycling Paths
The most important watercourse in Otmarov is the Dunávka. The area around the village is intensively farmed because of its highly favourable soil conditions and warm, low-precipitation climate. As a result, the landscape is not merely part of the village setting, but also reflects its economic character. Those who want to combine a rural setting with regional features during their stay will find here a clear contrast to purely urban destinations.
For families, the gently hilly terrain and low precipitation are explicitly described as suitable for uncomplicated cycling trips. More experienced cyclists, on the other hand, are recommended to take the EURO-VELO – Jantarová stezka long-distance cycle route. These two recommendations represent different ways of experiencing Otmarov by bicycle: once as a relaxed activity with manageable demands, and once as part of a longer, more athletic route.
Local History Spanning Several Eras
Otmarov was founded in 1783 by Otmar Konrád, the abbot of Rajhrad Monastery. However, the history of the village reaches further back in stories and traditions. The first settlers came predominantly from north-eastern Bohemia and were mostly German. The local past also includes the former settlement of Dunajovice, which presumably disappeared in the 15th century as a result of a fire followed by the plague.
A visible link to the more recent history of the municipality is the Chapel of St Othmar. It was built by the residents in 1883 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the municipality's founding. This makes it possible to connect various historical layers when exploring the village: its foundation in the 18th century, the memory of the former settlement and a building that commemorates a specific municipal anniversary.
Culture, Relaxation and an Event in November
Otmarov preserves its history not only in buildings. The municipal project Kronika vzpomÃnek comprises interviews with eyewitnesses from Otmarov about life in the municipality. The focus on personal memories supplements the written local history with everyday experiences. Otmarov's cultural events also include the Otmarovské hody, which take place in November.
For quieter hours, there is a landscaped multi-purpose sports field, a tennis court and a rest area, all suitable for relaxation. In this way, the village combines historical themes with simple opportunities for exercise and a break, without restricting a stay to just one type of excursion.
Transport Connections and Accommodation Base
Otmarov is part of the Integrated Transport System of the South Moravian Region and lies in Zone 510. Bus route 509 serves the MÄ›nÃn – Otmarov – Rajhradice – RebeÅ¡ovice – Brno route and returns. This specific connection is particularly relevant when choosing accommodation if the village is not to be considered in isolation, but in connection with other destinations along the route.
Otmarov is therefore suitable as a base for travellers who want to combine local history, rural landscapes, cycling and relaxation. The choice of accommodation should depend primarily on whether the focus is on local history and cultural events, an uncomplicated family cycling trip or the recommended long-distance cycle route. The existing features of the village allow for these different daily rhythms without reducing the character of the destination to a single attraction.
