Babice nad Svitavou

Babice nad Svitavou is a destination for travelers who wish to combine historical traces with an impressive karst landscape. The municipality was first mentioned in writing in 1365. Today, paths lead to viewpoints, geological features, and protected woodland landscapes; at the same time, the parish church of St. John the Baptist tells the story of the area's long history. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore important to consider whether you want to focus on culture, marked hiking trails, or the landscape of the Moravian Karst.

Church and Local History

The parish church of St. John the Baptist dates from 1448. Its core is Gothic, before it was remodeled in the Baroque style in 1765. Since 1996, it has been registered in the Brno-venkov District as an immovable cultural monument; its registration number is 0643. The church therefore provides a clear cultural and historical point of reference for a stay in Babice nad Svitavou. The municipal hiking tip through the surrounding area also begins at this building and follows the green-marked route toward the Čihadlo Nature Reserve.

Karst Landscape between Čihadlo and Malá Macocha

The area's natural feature is the Babická plošina plateau. It is located in the central part of the Moravian Karst, covers approximately 9 square kilometers, and lies at an average elevation of about 500 meters above sea level. Around 20 caves are known on the plateau. The entrance to Babická jeskyně is located above the Babice–Kanice road and only a few meters below the surface of the Babická plošina plateau. This precise location illustrates how closely the underground and surface forms of the karst are connected, without implying anything about the cave's accessibility.

Malá Macocha, a significant paleokarst locality, lies on the northwestern edge of Babice nad Svitavou. Today, it consists of three interconnected depressions about 8 meters deep. At the same time, it is an abandoned iron ore mine: several relatively narrow vertical shafts were excavated to a depth of approximately 42 meters. Malá Macocha thus combines a geological feature with traces of earlier raw-material extraction.

The Čihadlo Nature Reserve protects natural deciduous forests on Devonian limestone and loess deposits, as well as surface and underground karst features. A blue-marked hiking trail leads along the edge of the reserve to Srnčí studánka. The Čihadlo geological locality can also be reached via a hiking trail from the Kanice–Babice road; the trail passes through limestone up to the Babická plošina plateau. From the higher rocks, there is a view of the relief of the Brno Massif and the Svitava Valley.

Viewpoints and Marked Trails

The Alexandrova rozhledna lookout tower is freely accessible all year round. From Babice nad Svitavou, a green-marked gravel path leads directly to it. The stone lookout tower replaced a wooden viewing pavilion in 1887.

The Skalky viewpoint and Babická vyhlídka provide further orientation. The Babické studánky hiking tip passes Skalky; from there, there is a view of Babice nad Svitavou. Babická vyhlídka can be reached via the forest path connecting the Babice nad Svitavou railway stop with the municipality. In this way, several access routes described in different ways complement the picture of the area, without requiring a single standardized route or a specific length of stay.

If you would like to explore other places in the same broader area in addition to Babice nad Svitavou, you can find Ochoz U Tišnova, Střelice, Troubsko, Žďárec, Vlasatice, Hostěnice, Deblín and Kanice here.
