Ketkovice – Nature, Trails and History

Ketkovice combines a wooded landscape, distinctive river valleys, historical traces and two cycle routes of different lengths. Those looking for a place with nature- and culture-focused activities for their stay will find several clearly distinguishable options here for exploring together: from viewpoints and hiking trails to castle ruins, a church, a mill and recurring pilgrimages.

Landscape between forest, river and protected area

The wooded western part of the Ketkovice area lies in the Údolí Oslavy a Chvojnice Nature Park. The Údolí Oslavy a Chvojnice Nature Reserve also extends into Ketkovice. It is home to the only recent occurrence of the Adriatic lizard orchid in the Czech Republic, as well as a relatively large population of the large-flowered pasqueflower at the edge of its Czech range. For nature enthusiasts, this is an unusually specific reason to experience the landscape not merely as a backdrop, but as a destination in its own right.

The Oslava and Chvojnice Valley is a canyon-like tourist and recreational area shaped by meandering rivers. A prominent landmark is the Panorama viewpoint, from which there is a view of the Oslava meander known as Čertův jazyk.

Cycling and hiking with various starting points

Two documented cycle routes are available for an active day. The Templářská 5199 cycle route passes through Ketkovice and is part of a 39-kilometre circular route. The Hornická cycle route also passes through Ketkovice and is 50 kilometres long. This makes it possible to include two different route lengths in your travel plans without basing the choice of location solely on a single route.

The hiking connections also offer various approaches. A red-marked hiking trail leads from the Vysoké Popovice railway stop to Ketkovice and Levnov Castle. From Oslavany railway station, a green-marked hiking trail leads via Čučice to Ketkovický mlýn. Ketkovice is thus connected to the surrounding landscape by several routes and starting points; specific walking times or other access characteristics are not established by this.

Levnov Castle, church and historical traces

The remains of Levnov Castle lie on a rocky promontory high above the Oslava River. The castle was deliberately destroyed around 1440. Its main appeal is therefore the combination of medieval history, a striking location and preserved remains, rather than a fully preserved complex.

The Church of Saint Catherine stands in Ketkovice. It was built in 1780 on the site of an older church dating from the 13th century and is classified as a cultural monument. The building is an east-facing single-nave structure with a pentagonal presbytery. This precise architectural form complements its historical classification and also makes the church interesting for visitors who notice smaller architectural features during a tour of the village. The Ketkovický, Vydrův mlýn mill was probably built at the same time as Levnov Castle, after 1300, adding another building to the historical area of interest.

Pilgrimages as recurring events

The Cyril and Methodius pilgrimage takes place every year in July in Ketkovice. This annual pilgrimage in July includes a mass at the Cyril and Methodius Chapel. The St. Catherine pilgrimage follows every year in November. Those wishing to plan their stay around cultural events will thus find two annual occasions in different months.
