Borovník between the Stream, Forest and Highlands

Borovník is a small municipality at the foot of the peaks of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. The village stretches along the Halda stream, combining a distinctive landscape with rural history. At the northwestern edge of Borovník lies Strženec Pond on the course of the Halda; smaller forests extend through the surrounding area. Historical Traces in the Village Landscape

The first written record of Borovník dates from 1398. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk is considered the village’s dominant landmark. There is also a masonry bell tower in the center. Several stone crosses complement the village landscape: a cross from the 18th century stands at a place where, according to local tradition, a pilgrim froze to death; two other stone crosses are located at the edges of the village.

Local tradition also includes the legend of Franz Juříček. He is said to have fought against Swedish soldiers and stopped a mill wheel with his bare hands. Such stories add another historical layer to a walk through Borovník, without reducing the village to individual sights alone.

Festivals, Pilgrimage and Community Life

Borovník’s traditions are not merely part of the past. A women’s association continues to uphold the tradition of an annual carnival procession. The first Borovník–Rozseč carnival procession took place in 1976. A traditional pilgrimage is also held every year in the second half of May. It takes place on the grounds of the former school. An occupancy calendar is available for the former school building; reservations can be made through the municipal office.

Hiking and Cycling with Specific Routes

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Borovník via Vidonín, along the Libochovka and past Mezibořský Pond to Meziboří. The area around Borovník is suitable for walks and cycling trips on marked trails. A 30-kilometer route passes through Borovník; the village is reached at kilometer 25. This makes it possible to discover Borovník as a stop along a longer route rather than limiting a visit exclusively to the village center.

For cyclists, the 30-kilometer “Source of the Halda” tour is also documented. It leads from Níhovský Pond via Borovník to Rozseč. A sports facility was built next to the school building in 1997; it included a prepared tennis court. The combination of marked trails, waterways, ponds and routes offers various ways to explore the landscape at your own pace.
