Příbram District: Brdy, Culture and Water

Příbram District combines the protected Brdy landscape with mining history, castles, pilgrimage culture and the waters of Orlík Reservoir. For you, this means a region where active days on foot or by bicycle can be combined with cultural sightseeing and excursions by the water. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore worth deciding early whether you want to focus on nature, culture or water.

Brdy: Trails through a protected landscape

The Brdy Protected Landscape Area has been protected since 2016. Marked hiking and cycling trails lead through Brdy. The landscape is deliberately designed to be experienced independently: On the trails, you should not expect snack stands, souvenir shops, toilets or rubbish bins. Basic visitor facilities for the Brdy Protected Landscape Area are generally available in the surrounding gateway villages. This is an important difference between an excursion into the landscape and a stay in a place with regular facilities.

Documented starting points for a day in nature

Obecnice offers parking for up to 300 cars and access towards Tok, Jordán, Třemošná and Klobouček. Orlov u Příbrami also has visitor parking near the Brdy Protected Landscape Area; from there, access leads towards Třemošná and into the central part of Brdy.

Mining, gold and castle culture

The Příbram Mining Museum presents historic mining buildings and underground workings associated with silver, uranium and other ores. The Nový Knín Gold Museum focuses on gold mining, local crafts, industrial history and gold-panning championships. This creates two different cultural and historical perspectives side by side: here, the underground working world of mining becomes visible, while there, the history of gold and its processing takes centre stage.

Březnice Castle conveys the history of aristocratic families and artistic styles from the Renaissance to the 19th century. Its Lokšany Library was founded in 1558 and is among the oldest libraries in Bohemia. The castle also includes a Renaissance garden and an English park. For a cultural stay, the Antonín Dvořák Memorial Site complements this selection: it is located in a Neo-Renaissance-style chateau with an English park.

Pilgrimage, an educational trail and special walking destinations

Svatá Hora is a national cultural monument and is open for individual visits. A covered staircase connects the centre of Příbram with Svatá Hora; as far as the Coronation Altar, it is said to comprise 365 steps. The Fabián Educational Trail connects sights in the Podbrdy region for hikers and cyclists. Another route leads to Pilská Reservoir, where there is a seating area with views over the water and a game enclosure.

Water activities at Orlík Reservoir

Orlík Reservoir offers opportunities for boating, rowing, pedal boating, surfing and other activities on the water. The excursion boats operated by Orlík Boat Transport take you to Zvíkov and Orlík Castle. This allows a stay by the water to be combined with trips to historic destinations, while Brdy offers a distinctly different focus, with marked trails and protected landscape.

Quieter cultural moments are also part of the region. The open-air museum preserves rural architecture dating from the mid-17th century to the early 20th century. Depending on your preferred daily rhythm, you can therefore choose between trails through Brdy, museums and castle grounds, individual visits to Svatá Hora, and excursions at Orlík Reservoir.
