Korkyně – History, Forest and Gold Mining
Korkyně is located in the area of the central Vltava Valley, in the Slapy recreation region and near the town of Nový Knín. The village combines a long history with forests, water, marked trails and horse-related experiences. This offers different options for planning your trip: you can explore traces of cultural history, discover the landscape around the village or take a look at special local events.
History between the Chapel, Fortress and Gold
The earliest written mention of Korkyně dates from 1316. Local tradition also reaches far back: the legend “Pověst o Korkyni” was recorded in 1602 by Bartoloměj Paprocký. The village landscape and its history also contain traces of the former fortress. Its remains were converted into a granary. The fortress chapel was closed in 1790 and converted into a residential building. This should be distinguished from the chapel in Korkyně, which was renovated in 2012.
Another historical layer is represented by the Okrouhlík gold mine near Korkyně. It produced gold from remnants of ore veins and was leased out several times in the second half of the 16th century. Since 2006, the Korkyně area has also contained a undermined area with gold-bearing ore. It is visible through spoil heaps and depressions and lies in forest areas on the edge of the Okrouhlík Forest, northwest of the Pánkov district. Mining history is therefore also one of the unusual topics you can discover when exploring Korkyně.
Forest and Water around Korkyně
The municipality of Korkyně’s largest forest complex, Okrouhlík, extends southwest toward the Pánkov district. Korkyňský Pond is located directly in Korkyně. The pond was fully revitalized in 2022, furnished with benches and equipped with an information board. Together with the forest landscape, this creates a clearly recognizable connection with nature within the village. A marked tourist route runs through the Korkyně area and adds to the opportunities to explore the surroundings in your own way.
Horse Riding and an Event in November
If you would like to combine your time in Korkyně with a horse-related activity, Stáj Rybana offers horse riding in the village. The Hubertova jízda is also scheduled for November as a show-jumping event. These two offerings provide a distinct accent alongside the historical themes and the landscape around Okrouhlík. Depending on your interests, Korkyně can thus be experienced through cultural history, nature and equestrian sport.
Bus Stops in Korkyně and Křížov
There are three bus stops of Prague Integrated Transport (PID) in Korkyně. U Kapličky is located at the intersection of roads 10216 and 102; further stops are located in Křížov and Korkyně.
