Nalžovice: Nature Reserve and Baroque Local History

Nalžovice between the Vltava Valley and Local History

Nalžovice is a destination for travellers who want to discover protected landscapes and architectural history in their various facets. Highlights include the Vltava Valley with the Drbákov–Albertovy skály National Nature Reserve, an educational trail with viewpoints, and details of castles, churches and local heritage spanning several centuries.

Protected Nature at the Vltava Canyon

The Drbákov–Albertovy skály National Nature Reserve is located in the cadastral area of Nalžovice, on the right-hand side of the central Vltava Canyon between the recreational centres of Oboz and Častoboř. The reserve protects rocky slopes in the Vltava Valley with natural forests where the European yew occurs, as well as rocky steppes with rare and endangered species.

For reasons of nature conservation and visitor safety, the steep slopes may only be accessed via the marked educational trail. The circular route comprises 11 stations with information panels and viewpoints over the Vltava Valley. The route is therefore characterised not only by its landscape, but also by its clearly regulated path layout.

Baroque Traces and Historic Buildings

The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows is a free-standing Baroque château chapel on the northern side of the central château park. It was altered after a fire in the 19th century. The present appearance of Nalžovice Baroque château dates from 1750 to 1760. The château complex also includes a large park in a shallow valley, enclosed by a stone perimeter wall. The château is currently used as a social care facility for girls with intellectual disabilities.

Further details of the local history are provided by the Renaissance vicarage, which was remodelled in the Baroque period, and the rectory farmstead with a large landscaped courtyard, a barn and a perimeter wall with separate gates for vehicles and pedestrians. The masonry wayside shrine Boží muka has a small chapel at the top and dates from the late 18th or early 19th century. On the site of the Slavic hillfort Na Hradě, a cross-wall, the structure of a gate and further traces of fortifications can be identified on the slopes.

Chlum and Cycle Route 8132

Chlum is also among the documented cultural attractions in the surrounding area: The Church of Saint Wenceslas acquired its present appearance during alterations in 1790. A striking Baroque staircase decorated with statues leads to the church from the adjacent village square. The church and its cemetery are accessible from the south and west via local roads.

For cyclists, the 20-kilometre Cycle Route 8132 provides a clearly signposted connection from Vojkov to Křepenice via Chlum and Nalžovice. Its length gives the tour a clear time frame; its start, destination and the two villages it passes through make its route easy to follow. The OBOZ campsite for tents and caravans also belongs to the municipality of Nalžovice.
