Týnčany – Karst Landscape, Educational Trails and Village Culture

Týnčany is a destination for anyone who wants to combine natural formations, hiking trails and village culture. The Týnčany Karst is particularly distinctive: an incompletely developed karst area with plateaus, canyons and gorges, karren, sinkholes and caves. The village also contains historic traces, along with several paths connecting Týnčany with Petrovice and the surrounding landscapes.

Karst Landscape and Caves

The Týnčany Karst currently includes 19 recorded caves, more than 15 karst springs and spring outlets, as well as numerous above-ground karst features. Springs rising in the Týnčany limestones form an unusual tufa locality in this karst area. Here, therefore, you encounter not only individual viewpoints but also a landscape whose geological forms are visible in many places.

The access situation is important when planning your visit: No cave in the Týnčany Karst is open to the public. However, the Týnčany Speleological Club enables visits to some caves on various occasions. The irregularly held Open Caves Day usually includes a more detailed tour of Divišova Cave and an above-ground excursion through the Týnčany Karst. There is also a speleological base next to Divišova Cave. Cave visits are therefore tied to specific occasions and should not be equated with public access available at any time.

Educational Trails for Different Hiking Days

Several routes give your stay in Týnčany a clear focus. The approximately 30 km Petrovice–Prčice route passes through Týnčany. It begins at the SK Petrovice sports ground and ends in Prčice. The 27 km Petrovická educational trail leads from Petrovice via Týnčany and Divišova Cave back to Petrovice.

For a more informative hike, the Petrovicko educational trail is a good choice. It leads from Petrovice to Týnčany-Melena and provides information on botany, zoology, karst, geology and folk architecture at 20 information boards. The Petrovická educational trail is classified as easy to moderately difficult. You should allow a full day for it or divide the route into sections. This allows the longer routes to be approached deliberately as a full day of hiking or in individual stages, without confusing the different routes with one another.

The Týnčany Speleological Club also provides information about opportunities to participate in its work operations in the caves of the Týnčany Karst. This complements the tourist perspective with an insight into ongoing work around the karst area, without presupposing regular cave access.

Village History and Events

Týnčany has preserved a two-storey log-built chamber in House No. 25 and a square chapel on the village square dating from 1762. The village is also home to the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk. Alongside the nature trails, these small, specifically identifiable buildings give your stay a cultural and historical dimension.

The events calendar has its own highlights. The Pochod krajem kamenů march takes place every year on the second weekend in September; one checkpoint is at Divišova Cave. The Pochod do Prčic march is held every year in May, with its extended route passing close to Divišova Cave. In Týnčany, a one-day multi-genre festival also takes place every year on the third weekend in June, during the night from Saturday to Sunday, at Chalupa Helena.
