Počepice: Church, Gingerbread and Trails
Accommodation in Počepice
Počepice combines a distinctive church history with a local gingerbread tradition and several trails through the village. This brings together different interests with tangible points of connection: architectural history, an interactive introduction to gingerbread making, and routes for cycling and hiking. This blend makes the village especially appealing to travellers who want to consider culture as part of their day’s plans.
Church, Rectory and Chapel
The parish Church of St John the Baptist and its cemetery are Počepice’s most important landmark. The church dates from the first half of the 14th century and was remodelled in 1790 from the Gothic to the Baroque style. The same building therefore reveals both a medieval origin and a later Baroque transformation. For anyone interested in architectural history, the church offers a tangible glimpse of these different building phases.
The rectory in Počepice also has a clearly dated history: it was built in 1775 by Ferdinand of Lobkowicz. The Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is located in the rectory at Počepice 29. It was blessed on 9 September 2017; access to the chapel is not wheelchair accessible. These three sites—the parish church, rectory and chapel—represent different aspects of the village’s religious heritage, from the medieval church to the more recent blessing.
Statues and Film History
Near Počepice, at a place known as “U svatých” (“At the Saints”), stand statues of St Procopius and St John of Nepomuk. The site is on Road 105, about 1.3 kilometres from the village centre in the direction of Vysoký Chlumec. The older statue of St Procopius dates from the second quarter of the 18th century; the statue of St John of Nepomuk was created after the middle of the century. Their different dates give the site a distinctive art-historical character.
Another cultural connection is to film: Farářův konec, starring Vlastimil Brodský, was filmed in Počepice. For film fans, this adds another way to explore the village’s culture alongside its architectural and artistic history.
Cycling and Hiking
The six-kilometre cycling route 8144 connects Veselíčko, Počepice and Skoupý and links cycling routes 8139 and 8143. It runs from Veselíčko through Skuhrov, Počepice and Vitín to Skoupý. The route’s length and several places along its way are therefore specified. The Sedlčanská-Robinova route to Prčice also passes through Počepice, providing another route option.
On foot, the Stations of the Cross begin near the parish church and climb the south-eastern slope of Radešín. The route ends at Kalvárie, where views extend over Počepice and the surrounding countryside. Unlike cycling route 8144, this route has a described starting point, climb and endpoint. Trail conditions may change; check the Stations of the Cross route locally before planning your visit.
Bus connections to Počepice from Milevsko or Sedlčany are cited as a travel option. Check current timetables before your trip to make sure the journey fits your schedule.
Gingerbread and Activities
At Perníčkovna, children and adults can learn about the tradition of making and decorating gingerbread through interactive activities. This makes it a tangible shared experience for families who want to discover a local craft tradition as well as historic buildings. Check whether the activity is available before your visit.
At the U Radešínka complex, visitors can play adventure golf and try escape games. Most of the complex is accessible; if accessibility is important for your visit, check the specific arrangements with the operator as needed. The bakery in Počepice also has a local connection to gingerbread: it says it has been making it for more than 30 years.
