Solenice on the Orlík Reservoir – Sailing and Landscapes
Water landscapes and trails around Solenice
The Orlík Dam near Solenice is 91 metres high and primarily attracts water sports and sailing enthusiasts. A distinctive landscape feature is the Solenická podkova, a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Vltava River that is one of the landscape highlights of Central Bohemia. The Naučná stezka Solenice educational trail leads through Solenice and along a section of the Vltava below the Orlík Dam. It focuses mainly on water management, history and local nature. If you would like to structure your stay around specific themes, this trail combines water landscapes, regional history and nature.
Sailing on the Orlík Reservoir
Yacht Club Solenice is a sailing club on the Orlík Reservoir. The practical sailing courses offered by Yacht Club Solenice take place on the Orlík Reservoir and start at the base in the Povodí Vltavy Kameny Camp between Podskalí and Trhovky. Anyone can sign up at the Kameny summer camp and try sailing on dinghies. This means that, alongside observing the water landscape, visitors have a concrete opportunity to get to know the reservoir actively.
Yacht Club Solenice was founded on 19 October 1974 as “Jachetní oddíl Solenice” within TJ Solenice. The Kameny sailing camp also dates back to a racing training camp held in 1974. This year is therefore part of both the club’s history and the development of the sailing camp. Anyone interested in the connection between regional history and water sports will find a particularly clear thematic focus here.
Technology and culture in the surrounding region
The power station inside the Orlík Dam can be visited as part of an excursion by prior reservation. The historic site “Lety u Písku. Památník holokaustu Romů a Sintů v Čechách” is also located in the vicinity of Solenice. Further afield in the region are Hrad Zvíkov Castle, Svatá Anna Church and the Zřícenina Valdek ruins. These destinations offer different points of focus: following water management, there is a place of remembrance, with the themes then extending from a castle and church to a landscape of ruins.
Landscape landmarks
Several mountains complete the picture of the surrounding area. Hrby Mountain, Velká Leč Mountain and Velký Chlum Mountain are located near Solenice. Vinice Mountain lies further afield in the region. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether your priority is access to water and sailing activities, the educational trail through Solenice, or connections with cultural and landscape destinations in the wider area. For further comparisons between localities, you can also view Dubno, Cetyně, Bohutín, Klucenice, Nepomuk Pod Třemšínem, Lešetice, Milešov and Vystrkov.
