Dubenec Castle: Architectural History and Complex

Dubenec Castle was built after 1755 by converting an older building. It was redesigned in the Neo-Renaissance style to plans by Ignác Vojtěch Ullmann, while also retaining a Baroque core. The single-storey building has a rectangular floor plan and is partly basemented. These details describe different aspects: the basic shape, the vertical layout, and the stylistic development. This makes it possible to distinguish the architectural features from the history of the village.

The Baroque Chapel of the Virgin Mary is located in the north-west corner of the castle’s upper floor. The listed complex also includes the northern service wing, with a residential building and stables, and the southern service wing, with a stable and barn. It also comprises a courtyard with an enclosure wall and a castle park with remnants of the enclosure wall and a swimming pool. These features add residential, service, and outdoor areas to the description of the main building.

Village History and the Square

The village’s founding and the castle’s later conversion mark different developments: Dubenec was founded by Štěpán z Tetína in 1321, while the castle’s architectural history dates to after 1755. The two dates should therefore not be read as referring to the same historical event. A statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands in the village square.

Bytízský potok and the Kocába

The Bytízský potok approaches Dubenec from the southwest and flows through the built-up area. There it feeds several small ponds. In the northern part of the cadastral area, it joins the Kocába. The stream and the river are therefore clearly distinguishable: the Bytízský potok flows through the built-up village, while the Kocába runs through the northern cadastral area.

The Kocába enters the Dubenec area from the northwest, flows mostly east through its northern cadastral area, and leaves the area in the northeast. These directions add a spatial reference to the description of the waterways. Taken together, the two waterways have different courses and are connected at a specific confluence; this does not imply any particular route through the area.
