Prčice between Local History and Hiking Trails

Prčice lies in the basin known as “Český Merán” and combines a distinctly shaped local history with designated hiking experiences. The historic town centre developed around a manor house founded by the Vítkovci in the 11th century. For your stay, this means you will not discover an interchangeable base here, but a place where historical traces connect directly with paths through the surrounding area.

Historical Traces in the Town Centre

One of the important buildings is the Church of Saint Lawrence. It is originally Romanesque and was founded in the 11th or 12th century. The Morová kaple preserves a different memory: it was built after the plague epidemic of 1680 at a burial site for plague victims. Both places represent different chapters in the history of Prčice and provide specific points of interest for a walk through the town.

The town plan also tells of the place’s former importance. At that time, an early feudal trade route between Prague and South Bohemia ran through Prčice; its course can be recognised in the town plan. Those interested in historical development can therefore look not only at individual buildings, but also at the structure of the town.

Bridge, Route and Educational Trail

A striking testament to the history of transport is the Most Karla Burky. The bridge was completed in 1822 as a direct connection between Sedlec and Prčice. It is 200 metres long, designed in the Empire style, and has three arched openings. In this way, it adds a clearly recognisable structure to the local history, without its significance being limited to dates alone.

Two options with different focuses are available for active days. The “Od vítkovské růže k zázračnému prameni” educational trail has eleven information boards with play elements. It also connects to existing walking trails and mostly old sunken lanes – paths cut into the terrain through long use. For families looking for variety between information and playful stops while walking, this layout makes a concrete difference.

A designated 17-kilometre hiking route begins in Prčice and leads via ski areas and their viewpoints to Sedlec. It therefore has a different focus from the educational trail: instead of individual information boards, it centres on a longer connection between Prčice and Sedlec. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you mainly want to explore the historic town centre or combine your stay with such a hike.

Traditions and Special Dates

The traditional Prčické posvícení is part of the local events calendar. In 2026, it took place from 7 to 9 August. Another connection between Prčice and hiking is the “Pochod Praha–Prčice” march, which was first held on 17 April 1966 with the participation of Stanislav Rataj, who came from Prčice.
