Nový Knín – Gold History and Trails along the Kocába
Gold History and Trails around Nový Knín
Nový Knín combines an engaging history of gold mining with notable buildings and several trails of varying lengths. At the center is the Muzeum zlata Nový Knín: it is housed in a historic building dating from the 15th century on Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad and also serves as a tourist information center. This makes the exploration of the town begin in a square that brings together history, orientation and specific excursion destinations.
The Muzeum zlata is also the starting point of the Naučná stezka Nový Knín a okolí. The educational trail has ten information panels, passes former mine adits and presents the history of gold mining and gold extraction in the area around Kocába and Nový Knín. For your travel planning, it thus offers insight into a subject that shapes the landscape and the town's history beyond individual exhibits.
Your stay can therefore be organized according to your preferred focus. A visit to the square and the start of the educational trail emphasize local history and gold mining. The hiking routes shift the focus more toward distance and landscape. The excursion options thus differ in duration, route and thematic focus.
Buildings and Details on Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad
The Kostel sv. Mikuláše church also tells of the town's past. It was rebuilt in 1652 after the earlier church burned down to its foundations in the town fire of 1537. The stone-built church houses a crypt of the town's primators. Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad is also home to a fountain dating from 1837, made of stone blocks. Several benches beside the fountain are shaded in summer by three old lime trees.
Several different routes are available for longer tours. A yellow-marked hiking route passes through Nový Knín and ends at Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad; it is approximately 16 km long. The Naučná stezka Kozí Hory – Libčice has eight stations and passes former mine adits and mining subsidence areas. According to an official route specification, it is 18.6 km long. The two figures help you distinguish shorter and longer excursion plans without reducing the routes to the same experience.
The Kocába as a Landscape Shaped by Gold History
The Hadí řekou – údolí Kocáby route follows a large part of the most beautiful section of the Kocába between Nový Knín and Štěchovice. The Kocába and its immediate surroundings were known for centuries as a gold-bearing area. The area known as the Štěchovický zlatonosný revír extends between Nový Knín and Štěchovice and reaches as far as Třebenice. This allows visits to the town, educational trails and a broader exploration of the landscape to be viewed under the common theme of gold history.
