Příbram – Mining Culture, Svatá Hora and the Litavka

Mining history in Příbram

The Hornické muzeum Příbram is an open-air mining museum in Březové Hory. It includes the areas of the Vojtěch mine, the Anenská shaft and the Ševčinský mine. In terms of the number of historic objects with exhibitions, it is the largest mining museum in the Czech Republic. Visitors can ride an underground railway above ground and underground.

The headframe building of the Vojtěch mine is an architectural technical monument dating from 1870. Here, mining history can be encountered in Příbram both as a museum subject and in the form of a single historic building.

Cultural monuments between the city and the pilgrimage site

Svatá Hora is a national cultural monument, an important Baroque complex and a pilgrimage site. For almost 350 years, it has risen approximately 590 m above the city. The complex is open to the public for individual visits. A covered staircase leads to Svatá Hora from the centre of Příbram; there are said to be 365 steps in total to the Coronation Altar.

The Church of St James the Greater, also referred to as kostel sv. Jakuba Staršího, is probably Příbram’s oldest urban architectural monument. Zámeček-Ernestinum now houses a wedding hall and the city gallery dedicated to the distinguished Czech photographer František Drtikol. Zámeček-Ernestinum is also one of the oldest surviving monuments in Příbram.

Educational trails and nature along the Litavka

On the southwestern outskirts of Příbram, in the Litavka valley, lies the Naučná stezka lesoparku Litavka, an educational trail with 12 stops. It provides information about the local fauna and flora as well as places where silver ore was processed centuries ago. During the walk, children can complete various playful tasks.

Lesopark Litavka has a network of paths leading to forest corners, floodplain meadows, the Litavka River and ponds hidden among the trees. During walks, you may observe rare globeflowers and irises; kingfishers can occasionally be seen above the river.

The Naučná stezka Padák has a different focus: eleven stops provide information about the functions of the landscape and forest in the ecosystem. The educational trail is approximately 2.7 km long and includes play and discovery elements.

Routes for different travel days

Another option is the “From Příbram to Tok” route. It begins in Orlov and follows cycle routes 8190 and 8258 towards Tok, the highest mountain in the Brdy Mountains at 865 m.
