Březnice Castle: Cultural History and Nature During the Same Stay

Březnice Castle offers a view of several centuries of Czech cultural history, as well as park and landscape areas. Particularly striking is the Lokšanská Library in Březnice Castle: it is the oldest castle library hall in the Czech Republic preserved in its original form and dates from 1558. It was built from 1642 to 1650 by Carlo Lurago and his brother Martin. The single-nave interior with side chapels is richly decorated with stucco and numerous works of art. In the Jewish cemetery, the Hebrew tombstones recall the tombstones in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague through their inscriptions and forms. The Ludvík Kuba Gallery displays works in four halls featuring motifs from Březnice and South Bohemia, as well as portraits, figure paintings and genre paintings. The connection between the construction period, the builders and the furnishings opens up different ways of approaching the church: architectural history can be combined with the examination of stucco and works of art.

Park, Forest Trail and Terrain Features

The castle grounds continue southward into an English park and farther east into an extensive castle game preserve. The park and garden of Březnice Castle are freely open to the public at the stated times. With children, the Tušílkova Trail is also suitable as a forest path; it is intended for families with children and has various stations offering educational activities. Nearby is the Vinice terrain feature, listed as a mountain. Štěrbina, Praha and Velká Třemošná are also located in the surrounding area and are likewise listed as mountains.

Herold Brewery: Craftsmanship and Baroque Architecture

Herold Brewery in Březnice brews beer using traditional technology with a high proportion of manual work. The single-storey Baroque-style building was constructed after 1722 and has preserved almost all of its historic character. Production and architectural form represent two distinct focal points: traditional technology and manual work shape the production process, while the Baroque style and construction after 1722 define the building’s historical context.
