Ouběnice – Hillforts, Church and Trails along the Kocába
Ouběnice between Landscape and Cultural History
Ouběnice and its surroundings combine forests, streams and ponds with a variety of reasons to visit. The landscape is suitable for both active and passive recreation; at the same time, the area is of interest to recreational cyclists, although there are no marked cycling routes within the municipality. This gives you hiking trails, cultural history, water and events to consider side by side when planning your trip.
St. Margaret’s Church and Local Traditions
St. Margaret’s Church has a Romanesque nave and a tower dating from the end of the 12th century. In the 14th century, it was expanded with a chancel, and in 1759 it was given its Baroque appearance. A pilgrimage Mass is held once a year in the chapel in Ouběnice. The Ouběnice pilgrimage in July commemorates the victims of the Heydrich terror from Ouběnice and the surrounding area.
Hillforts and Mill Remains along the Kocába
The hillfort near Ouběnice lies on a partly wooded rise with two peaks above the right bank of the Kocába stream, approximately 1 kilometre southwest of Ouběnice and 0.5 kilometres west of the settlement of Chaloupky. A probably multi-part hillfort complex is located nearby, with a presumed acropolis on the northern peak; it is surrounded by a rampart, while the age of the hillfort is not yet known. On the edge of the village stand the remains of the Podolský, Pytlíkův and Čermákův mlýn mills. The site can only be reached via the path to the Kocába and is freely accessible.
Hiking Trails, Pond and Events
The marked hiking trail follows existing farm roads and forest paths, and in exceptional cases also roads. A blue-marked hiking trail passes through Chaloupky and leads visitors to sights in the surrounding area. The Skalice–Višňová blue-marked hiking trail runs through the Ouběnice area. There is a rest area beside the pond that visitors passing by can use during their outings.
The best-known events in Ouběnice include the Motoorání motorcycle gathering and trial competitions. Since 2006, the Automotoklub Ouběnice – Bikers Village has organised national and international motorcycle trial competitions, and since 2014 it has also organised biketrial competitions. For those interested in fishing, the Kocába 1 A fishing grounds include the 0.9-hectare Splavěcí water body in the Ouběnice cadastral area.
