Discover Pičín: Church, Fortress and Nature in the Surrounding Area

Pičín combines historical traces in its townscape with surroundings where mountains, a pond and regional cultural attractions come together. This means your visit need not be limited to sightseeing: the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the former fortress and the traditional Pičínská rybka fishing competition each offer a different experience. Church, Cemetery Gate and Fortress

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dates from the late 13th century, has an early Gothic core and was remodelled in the Baroque style. Directly connected to it is the cemetery's Baroque columned gate. It dates from 1691 and was transferred from a nearby dissolved monastery. The statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Anthony of Padua, dating from 1708, also come from the same site. The history of the town is thus made visible in a specific architectural ensemble spanning several periods. The ensemble includes an early Gothic core, Baroque remodelling, a transferred gate and two statues of saints from the early 18th century.

The former fortress and later granary consist of an imposing two-storey building. The façades feature remnants of Renaissance sgraffito, while the surrounding wall is lined with arcaded arches. The fortress, built in the Middle Ages, probably in the 13th century, was used as a granary from the 18th century onwards. The transition from a medieval fortification to later agricultural use is therefore part of Pičín's distinctive historical character.

Water, Landscape and Events

The traditional Pičínská rybka fishing competition takes place at Dražský rybník pond. It is held in two categories: for adults, and for children and young people under 18. This clear division makes the event particularly appealing to families who would like to discover a local tradition alongside the cultural attractions. The Pochod Pičín–Řitka was listed as the eighth edition in 2026, adding a dated hiking event to the range of activities.

The Velký Chlum and Kuchyňka mountains are located near Pičín. The surrounding area of Pičín also includes Hradec Mountain, the Zřícenina Valdek ruins, Plešivec Mountain and the Church of Svatá Anna. Further afield in the region around Pičín are Karlštejn Castle and the historic site “Lety u Písku.
