Vysoký Chlumec between History and Landscape

Vysoký Chlumec lies in the picturesque landscape of Střední Povltaví, which belongs to the Toulava tourist region. The town combines a distinctive history with rural culture and links to nature. This creates a destination where castles, sacred buildings, an open-air museum and the regional brewing tradition offer different ways to explore the Czech past.

Castle History and Sacred Sites

Vysoký Chlumec Castle was probably built in the second half of the 14th century by Purkart Strnad z Janovic. Vysoký Chlumec Castle is not open to the public. It therefore forms part of the town’s historical character without being considered a regularly accessible attraction.

At the eastern end of Vysoký Chlumec, the Chapel of the Most Sacred Heart of the Lord stands in the settlement of Vápenice. The Chapel of St Anne is also located in the vicinity of Vysoký Chlumec. It was the first work of the local master builder František Holan. The two chapels are thus located at different points around the town and complement the castle history with smaller sacred landmarks.

Open-Air Museum with Different Ways to Visit

The Vysoký Chlumec Open-Air Museum contains a total of 24 buildings, 14 of which can be accessed through interior or special exhibitions. Residential buildings, farm buildings, technical structures and smaller sacred buildings are gradually being relocated to the natural grounds in the stream valley. The interior exhibitions complement the buildings on the grounds with insights into rural living and work.

There are two visitor routes available for the museum: a self-guided tour and a guided tour. On the self-guided tour, you decide the order yourself; on the guided tour, you are accompanied by a guide. You can therefore choose between independent exploration and an accompanied option. The open-air museum’s programme also includes the traditional Masopust celebration every year, as well as full-day programmes entitled Den řemesel. In addition to touring the grounds, these events offer their own cultural highlights.

Brewing and Natural Environment

The brewing exhibition in Vysoký Chlumec documents that the first written references to beer brewing there date back to 1466. On display are old beer bottles, coopering, labels, beer mugs and beer coasters. The various objects combine information about the brewing tradition with aspects of craftsmanship and beer culture. Visits to the exhibition can be arranged in advance through the local information centre.

The Vápenská jezera natural site is located near Vápenice. It is designated as a protected area because of its rich population of waterfowl. The natural environment therefore provides a different focus from the buildings and exhibitions: here, waterfowl and the designated protected status take centre stage.
