Trhové Dušníky: Archaeology, River Landscape and Culture

Trhové Dušníky is a place with several distinct layers. Its medieval and modern-era historic centre is designated as a significant archaeological site. At the same time, the Litavka, an unusual river formation, historic buildings and paths through the village shape its character. This creates a destination where history, landscape and active exploration come together.

Historic centre on the Litavka and Příbramský potok

The archaeological historic centre of Trhové Dušníky lies on the left bank of the Litavka, at its confluence with the Příbramský potok. This precise location is part of the character of the place and helps with spatial orientation: the history of the historic centre is not separate from the river landscape, but is complemented by its location by the water.

Fortress and chapel with distinctive details

The local fortress of Trhové Dušníky is first documented in 1581. Another architectural feature is the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity. It has an atypical centrally arranged floor plan with a short hexagonal nave. The chapel probably originated through the reconstruction of an early Baroque castle chapel from the 17th century. It stands southeast of the village green and the former castle, on the edge of a flat, low, grassy terrace. Further southeast, this terrace descends via a short slope to two ponds.

An underground passage

Another historical layer lies underground. The protected section of the Dědičná štola císaře Josefa II. runs as an underground passage from the Ševčiny mine to its outlet area near Trhové Dušníky. As a separate topic, it complements the fortress and chapel as well as the river landscape along the Litavka. This allows you to focus your research in different ways: visible architectural history, the location by the water and the underground route can be considered separately. This provides a clear structure for a stay intended to combine historical and landscape interests.

A rare river formation in the Czech Republic

Due to their morphology and formation, the bends of the Litavka in the area of Trhové Dušníky and downstream correspond more closely to a laterally displaced riverbed than to classic meandering. Such lateral instability of a riverbed is rare in the Czech Republic. Anyone who perceives the landscape not merely as a backdrop but also in terms of its formation will find an unusual point of observation here.

Educational trail and documented event

The Fabiánova naučná stezka runs through Trhové Dušníky and is intended for tourists and cyclists. It thus complements the historical topics with an opportunity to explore the village and its surroundings along a designated route. The Dušnická šlápota event was held in 2023, 2024 and 2026. These three documented dates form another specific part of the local experience.
