Hvožďany – Třemšín Nature Park, Culture and Educational Trail
Hvožďany between the Brdy Landscape and Culture
Hvožďany lies at the foot of the southwestern Brdy, and the entire cadastral area of the municipality lies within Třemšín Nature Park. If you would like to combine natural surroundings and regional history on your trip, you will find various points of interest here: an educational trail focusing on the history of gold, distinctive historic buildings, and a venue for cultural and community events.
The Church of Saint Procopius and the Visitation of the Virgin Mary stands in the village. It is an immovable cultural monument. The Hvožďany Fortress in the southwest of the village provides another historical landmark. It stands on a low elevation; at its western foot lies a small pond fed by the Hvožďanský stream. The fortress is a massive building with an upper floor and three wings arranged around a central courtyard.
Mill, Exhibitions and Events
Zíbův Mill in Hvožďany preserves the complete technical equipment of a roller mill with several archaic elements. At the same time, it is a building of very significant heritage value. It is therefore one of the places where technological development and regional architectural history can be observed particularly concretely.
The reconstructed Špejchar Hvožďany is a venue for exhibitions, concerts, talks, craft markets and other cultural and community events. Its exhibition on the history of the municipality of Hvožďany and its surroundings recalls the agricultural tradition as well as important personalities and events of the region. Špejchar also houses permanent exhibitions of the Hvožďansko Museum, a collection of axes and an extensive collection of firefighting artefacts belonging to František Polák. The cultural range in Hvožďany thus extends from sacred architecture and a fortress to a mill and an exhibition venue.
