Hřiměždice between Local History and the Quarry

Hřiměždice combines local history with an unusual waterscape. The village lies in the immediate vicinity of the Slapy Reservoir. On its northeastern edge is the Hřiměždice Quarry, also known as Kujalův. This makes it a destination where historic buildings and a diving history with milestones dating back to 1959 can be explored within a clear thematic setting. The proximity of the reservoir and the location of the quarry bring the landscape, village character and water-related history together in a compact area.

The Quarry and Its Diving History

The first major diving course at Hřiměždice Quarry took place in 1959 under the direction of experienced instructors who had gained their experience in Germany. Later, SVAZARM established a training centre for military and police divers at the quarry. The site remains a popular destination for numerous divers. The quarry’s history thus extends from the early training courses through organised training structures to its present-day importance in the sport of diving.

Special events are also part of the quarry’s history. The Highjump event, featuring jumps into the water, has taken place annually since 2000 around the turn of July and August. Since 2001, there has been a large swing at the former helicopter site. Different periods and themes therefore come together at the quarry: diver training, an annual recurring event and a distinctive site from its former use.

The Chateau, Church and Traces in the Villagescape

Hřiměždice Chateau is a simple single-storey building in the style of Classicist Baroque and is first mentioned in 1788. Another historic landmark is St. Anne’s Church, built in 1797. It is a single-nave church with a presbytery closed on three sides on the outside and a tower with a bell roof. Part of its interior furnishings comes from the former Pauline monastery in Obořiště. The construction period, floor plan, presbytery, tower and transferred furnishings give the church several historical points of reference that come together when viewing the building.

Near the church, a statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands on the bridge over the stream flowing through the municipality. Together with the chateau and St. Anne’s Church, it forms a compact walking route through various chapters of local history. The villagescape thus combines a former chateau building, sacred architecture and a bridge statue beside flowing water.
