Chraštice: Church, Statue and Monuments
Accommodation in Chraštice
Chraštice is defined by its church, a distinctive statue of a saint and several memorials. Visitors who like to combine architectural styles with local history when choosing a destination will find a range of themes here: the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a historic tomb and a war memorial. These features give the town a distinct cultural identity, though they do not all tell the same story.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Statue of St. John of Nepomuk
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a distinctive landmark of Chraštice and the surrounding area. Attached to the church is the North Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, which is now used as a storage space. This present-day use is as much a part of the building’s character as its name: the chapel is a specific architectural feature, while its use as a storage space describes its current role.
Another point of reference in the town is the statue of St. John of Nepomuk. It stands in the southern part of the village square, diagonally opposite the rectory at No. 1. The sandstone statue rests on a tall column pedestal and dates from the first half of the 19th century. The saint is depicted holding a cross without a corpus, resting on a palm branch. The statue has been protected as a cultural monument since 3 May 1958.
Its location, material, form and protected status offer different ways to understand the statue. The tall pedestal describes its form, while the cross and palm branch provide a precise iconographic detail. Visitors interested in sacred art can therefore focus not only on the saint’s name, but also on the specific depiction.
Tomb and Remembrance
The Chraštická plačka stands in the cemetery. It is an Empire-style tomb with a balustrade and a sculptural group, built in 1789. The combination of a tomb, an architectural enclosure and figures makes it a distinct subject alongside the church and the statue of St. John of Nepomuk: here, the focus is on funerary design.
A memorial to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars stands in front of the church. It was erected shortly after the First World War in memory of those who fell in that war and bears the inscription “Vděčná osada Chraštice svým hrdinům 1914-1919” (“The grateful community of Chraštice to its heroes 1914–1919”). The inscription expresses the community’s gratitude to its heroes and records the years 1914 to 1919. This sets the memorial apart from the dates associated with the tomb and statue: the local memorials refer to different periods.
For trip planning, this adds up to a cultural and historical focus with several facets: church architecture and the chapel’s use, the depiction of a saint, and the commemoration of the dead and of war. Chraštice may therefore interest you if you are looking for a destination whose monuments represent more than a single era or style.
