Nečín – Granite Country, Forests and Hiking Trails

Nečín is a place for visitors who want not only to look at the landscape, but also to discover its geological and historical character. The municipality is known as granite country, with many abandoned and flooded quarries. At the same time, more than half of its area is forested. This brings granite, water, forest and marked trails together within a small area, offering various opportunities for spending time in nature as well as remarkable traces of the past.

Granite, Quarries and Panoramic Views

Very high-quality gray-white Nečín granite has been quarried in Nečín since the 18th century. The stone shapes the character of the place and explains why abandoned quarries are among its most striking landscape features. North of Nečín lies Lom Vančátka, the largest of the small flooded granite quarries. The quarry is used for swimming; in winter, ice bathing or ice skating is possible there. The same place therefore represents very different seasonal experiences, without this implying any particular facilities or a fixed range of leisure activities.

Another distinctive point is Nečínská Besídka. At 508 m, it is the highest point in the municipality of Nečín. In clear weather, the view extends as far as the Šumava Mountains. Those who want to combine experiences in nature with orientation in the landscape will find a specific viewpoint here, distinct from the water-filled quarries and extensive forests.

Forest and Marked Hiking Trails

The forests around Nečín are used for mushroom picking and recreation during the summer months. This gives you a landscape shaped not only by the quarries, but also by forested areas and seasonal activities. The documented hiking trails provide various ways to explore the area: the blue-marked trail leads from Ouběnice into the municipality of Nečín and connects at the Skalice, rozc. signpost with the red-marked trail. This section is 3 km long.

A second option is the yellow-marked trail. It connects sections of the green-marked trail and runs directly through Nečín along the route between Vrchy, rozc. and Žebrák. Its documented length is 3.4 km.

Bronze Hoard and Recorded History

Nečín also has an unusual archaeological connection. The bronze hoard found by Josef Červenka, a stonecutter from Nečín, at Pudilův lom in Besídka consists of a bundle of bronze needles. Historians date it to 2,500 years ago. The Nečín bronze hoard is kept at the National Museum in Prague and served as the basis for Eduard Štorch’s book “Bronzový poklad.” Those interested in the history of the place therefore encounter not only a story rooted locally, but also a find with a specific place of safekeeping and a literary legacy.

Further historical references should explicitly be understood as part of local tradition. The Varta hill near the settlement of Skalice is said to have once guarded the Sedlčany Road, a branch of the Golden Trail. Likewise, a castle is said to have once stood on the wooded Bělohrad hill. Both references belong to earlier history or local tradition and should not be understood as current buildings or present-day functions.
