Prague-East District: Culture, Forests and Special Places to Visit

Prague-East District combines vivid cultural history with protected landscapes and unusual experiences. The selection around Říčany, Máslovice, Panenské Břežany and Brandýs nad Labem is particularly diverse: it ranges from hands-on activities and historical exhibitions to beech forests, river landscapes and educational trails. For your stay, you can therefore choose between culture-focused discoveries and experiences in nature without limiting yourself to just one type of excursion.

Museums and experiences with a specific connection to the region

The Říčany Museum offers themed exhibitions, practical workshops, educational programs and public events. The focus is therefore not only on viewing exhibits, but also on a changing program combining knowledge and hands-on activities. The Astrostezka Říčany begins at an unusual starting point: the entrance to the Říčany Geopark at Masarykovo náměstí 71. In Říčany, the Dvorek outdoor exhibition presents agriculture in the early 20th century. One of the exhibits is a farm wagon from 1929, making the historical focus tangible. In Máslovice, the educational trail leads through the natural and historical features of the Dolní Povltaví area. The Malé máslovické muzeum másla complements this regional insight with an interactive exhibition on butter production, whose exhibits visitors can try out in practice. The museum is wheelchair accessible and provides visitors with visual impairments with worksheets in Braille.

Panenské Břežany and Brandýs nad Labem

Panenské Břežany offers several different approaches to history. The modern multimedia exhibition “Zločin a trest” is located in the upper castle and also includes a replica of the Pankrác guillotine. Another historical layer is represented by the Chapel of St. Anne: it was built in 1705–1707 according to plans by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel and is considered one of his earliest works. The memorial complex in Panenské Břežany is fully wheelchair accessible. Brandýs nad Labem Castle is also suitable for a focus on cultural history. The national cultural monument was built on the site of an original Gothic castle. Until 1918, it was imperial property; it was also one of Rudolf II’s preferred places to stay. Here, architectural history, courtly use and the development from a Gothic castle site into a château are therefore clearly connected.

Forests, waterways and trails

For quieter experiences in nature, consider Voděradské bučiny. The extensive forest complex lies on the right bank of the Jevanský Stream and is protected because of its beech stands. Other defining features include forests bearing traces of frost weathering. The Voděradské bučiny Educational Trail is 8 km long and has 8 stations. Those wishing to explore the area by bicycle will find cycling routes 1, 0023, 0024, 0031 and 0085 there. Other landscapes include the Větrušická ravine with its rocky slopes on the right bank of the Vltava, as well as the Káraný-Hrbáčkovy tůně protected area. Natural eutrophic ponds, floodplain meadows, wetlands and floodplain forests are protected there. These differences help you choose your preferred holiday focus: historic interiors and exhibitions on the one hand, and forests, riverbanks and wetlands on the other.
