Káraný on the Elbe and Jizera

Káraný lies at the confluence of the Elbe and Jizera rivers. This gives the town a clear appeal for travelers who want to combine nature, activity and history. Cycling between bridges and forest paths

Cycle route 0041 Káraný–Kochánky passes through Káraný and runs via Sojovice and Předměřice to Kochánky. Another notable connection is the pedestrian and cycle bridge to Toušeň: the bridge carries the pedestrian and cycle route as well as a medium-pressure gas pipeline across the Elbe, about 500 meters upstream from the confluence of the Jizera and Elbe. The sections differ considerably when planning a day trip: Route 0041 connects Káraný with Sojovice, Předměřice and Kochánky, while the unpaved forest paths to Zelená bouda offer a different surface. Káraný is also a gateway to the Císařské lesy forests; unpaved forest paths lead from Káraný to Zelená bouda. The Greenway Jizera complements this network with a connection back to the Elbe at Lázně Toušeň.

Educational trail, floodplain forest and protected area

The “Naučná stezka Údolím Labe” educational trail is 21 km long and passes Grado and a pedestrian bridge over the Elbe along its route. The trail has 24 information-board stations and connects Lysá nad Labem, Káraný and Čelákovice. The length of 21 kilometers is just as important for planning as the 24 stations: the route combines a longer distance with 24 information points and passes through Lysá nad Labem, Káraný and Čelákovice. Grado is a former oxbow of the Elbe. Lipovka is a remnant of the original floodplain forest along the Elbe, while Václavka is a state nature reserve. Grado, Lipovka and Václavka thus represent three different natural features: a former oxbow, a remnant of floodplain forest and a state nature reserve. This gives you concrete points of reference for the river, floodplain forest and protected area without reducing the landscape to a single theme.

Waterworks and chapels

The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk is part of the local history. It was built in 1907 in the center of the original village on Václavská Street. The Káraný waterworks complex was officially commissioned on January 1, 1914. After commissioning, the waterworks supplied Prague with 880 liters of drinking water per second from the region. The open-air forest chapel “U svatého Václava” also stands nearby; it dates from around 1696 and belonged to one of three natural hermitages located close to one another.

Around Káraný, the Jizera 1 fishing grounds extend from the river’s mouth into the Elbe at Toušeň to the weir of the Kačov power station; fishing from a boat is permitted.
