Husinec: Vltava landscape, nature reserve and special educational trails

Husinec combines the Vltava landscape with protected natural areas, educational trails and an unusual history of science. Depending on your interests, the focus can be on rocks, riverbanks, plants, local history or special exhibits.

Natural areas along the Vltava

The Větrušické rokle National Nature Reserve is located in the vicinity of Husinec. It protects rock and dry grassland ecosystems, heathlands and warm-climate oak forests. Behind the ÚJV complex, the rocky slopes of Větrušické rokle rise 90 to 100 metres above the level of the Vltava. Their diverse mosaic structure includes rock steppes, making the landscape particularly varied. For nature observation, the rocks, heathlands and warm-climate oak forests can be appreciated as distinct habitats.

The Řež Meander, formed by the Vltava, is also part of the Husinec landscape. On the slope above Husinec, there is a very well-preserved population of the Czech yellow star-of-Bethlehem. Rock alyssum and mountain alyssum also grow on the bare rocks. The combination of the river bend, rocky slopes and distinctive plants offers different focuses for nature observation.

Educational trails and orientation along the river

Near Husinec-Řež, the “Školní naučná stezka Údolím Vltavy” runs through a short section of the Vltava Valley. The path, bordered by rocks, follows the bank of the Vltava. As a result, this educational trail focuses on the immediate connection between the river, riverbank and rocky landscape. The “Naučná stezka prof. Čestmíra Šimáně” has a different focus: it presents the history of the research institute, introduces its founder and incorporates the municipality of Husinec. It also opens part of the previously fenced-off natural area to the public and forms part of the educational trail network around the research institute.

The “Husinec–Řež” ferry landing is located at the end of V Luhu Street. The ferry staff assist with transporting bicycles, prams and people with reduced mobility. U Pasáčka Park offers views of the opposite bank and the flowing Vltava; it is also home to a regional biocentre. The municipal map of Husinec-Řež also shows a recreational zone with sports facilities.

Exhibition, remembrance and local history

The exhibition of the “Jaderné muzeum ÚJV Řež” includes historical devices and equipment used for materials research, facilities from the development of radiopharmaceuticals and an extensive collection of dosimeters. It also features curiosities from modern history, such as radioactive tableware, radioactive toothpaste and domestic radon baths. The exhibition thus combines technological development, the history of research and unusual everyday objects within a single thematic area.

The “Kaple sv. Václava” is an important place in the municipality and commemorates the end of the war and peace. It therefore complements the natural-history and scientific themes with a place of remembrance. Natural areas, research and local history each have their own place in the picture of Husinec.
