Větrušice on the Vltava: Cliffs, Trails and Nature

Větrušice lie high above the Vltava on its rocky right bank. Between the nature reserve, viewpoints, riverside trails and a long local history, this is a destination where landscape experiences and discovering the village come closely together. The Větrušické rokle National Nature Reserve lies between Větrušice and the Vltava. Větrušické rokle was first placed under protection on 17 April 1969. Větrušice’s elevated location offers views of the Vltava, the cliffs and the municipality of Libčice on the opposite bank. In good visibility, the peaks of the České středohoří can also be seen. Červená skála, a viewpoint, is also located nearby.

A marked difference in elevation characterizes the landscape: at 287 metres above sea level, Velký vrch is the highest point in the cadastral area, while the Vltava valley directly below lies at 170 metres above sea level. Wildlife is also part of the river landscape. Fish, amphibians, reptiles and waterfowl live in the Vltava floodplain.

Trails along the Vltava and through Dolní Povltaví

A path along the Vltava can be walked; in particular, it can only be cycled at one’s own risk. Those looking for a specific riverside hike can reach Drábovna Cave via a small path leading along the river from Řež. The cavity of Drábovna Cave is 9 metres long, on average 3 metres wide and 3 metres high. This makes it possible to combine the outing with a clear destination without equating the cave with a large visitor complex.

After its relocation, the Via Czechia route “Stezka středozemím” runs through Větrušice in the Dolní Povltaví area above the “Wltawa Canyon”. For families with different interests, this gives the village several types of discovery: a walk by the water, a viewpoint, a landscape with protected habitats or a section of a longer route. As an example of a local event, the “Strašidelná stezka” took place on 7 November 2025 at 5:30 p.m. at the beginning of the trail to Velký vrch. It offered an adventure trail in the dark, spooky tasks for children and a small reward at the end; this date is in the past.

Village history and practical orientation

A statue of Saint Wenceslas still stands in the park on Větrušice village square today. The origins of Větrušice are attributed to the year 1306, while the first written mention of the municipality dates from 1316. Those who want to get to know the character of the village as well as its nature will therefore find a historical connection directly in the village.

Větrušice is served by bus route 374 of the ČSAD Střední Čechy transport company as part of Prague’s Integrated Transport System. At the same time, Větrušice is a dead-end municipality: the only road into the village is Class III road No. 24219. These two details help with basic orientation for arriving without anticipating timetables or travel times.
