Křenek – Elbe Riverbank, Křenecké Lake and Local History

Křenek lies on the right bank of the Elbe in the northern part of the Prague-East District. The village combines a riverside landscape, a distinctive body of water and a historically shaped village centre. Between the water, the flat Elbe landscape and the medieval settlement structure, there are various opportunities for eventful days.

Water Landscape on the Elbe Riverbank

At the northern edge of Křenek lies Křenecké Lake, on the border with the neighbouring municipality of Ovčáry. It was created on the site of the former Na Homolce hill through the extraction of gravel and sand from a former pit between 1958 and 1963. Today, the body of water serves as a natural swimming area and has facilities including a car camping site and sports grounds. The lake thus combines swimming, activity and time spent in a landscape whose present form arose from its former use.

Cycling between the River and the Village

The flat landscape, with a mosaic of vegetation along former Elbe meanders, is suitable for walking and cycling. The international Labská stezka No. 2 runs along the banks of the Elbe in Křenek; the additional cycle route 0039 passes through Křenek. This gives you two different route options for planning your day: one follows the riverside landscape, while the other incorporates the village into the cycling tour. Depending on your preferred focus, you can choose nature by the water or a route combining it with the village.

Medieval Structure and Local History

The surviving settlement structure of Křenek has medieval origins. Křenek was founded at a ford across the Elbe, originally probably as a group of farmsteads on a spur between the river meanders. The original village developed around a round village green that remains well preserved to this day.

In 1895, an independent school was established in Křenek in a building of its own. The former school building was restored in 1998 and converted into the municipal tavern Obecní hospoda; it was ceremonially opened on 1 July 1999. The oldest surviving crosses in Křenek date from 1830. The monument to the fallen dates from 1924 and was created by the sculptor Emanuel Klose from Lysá nad Labem.

Local Character and Landscape Protection

The local character is also tangible: Farma Janouškovi is a family-run business in the municipality of Křenek in the Polabí region and primarily grows vegetables and herbs. The farm offers vegetables, fruit and herbs from its range. This adds an agricultural dimension to the landscape, while the European Natura 2000 site Polabí u Kostelce is associated with the municipalities of Křenek and Záryby. At the Elbe riverbank, bodies of water, cultural landscape, local history and regional agriculture thus come together.
