The Church of St. Peter and Paul and Its Monuments

The Church of St. Peter and Paul stands on a hill in the town center. It is originally Gothic and dates from the 14th century; it was first mentioned in 1350. The historic surroundings also include the bell tower. It stands on the site of an older structure that was originally built of wood and later of stone and probably dates from the mid-14th century.

West of the church stands a statue of Saint Jude Thaddeus, dated to 1860. Its history also reflects changes in the townscape: until 1969, the statue stood at the intersection toward Horoušany and Nové Jirny. Due to repeated damage, it was moved to the grounds of the Church of St. Peter and Paul. In this compact area, it is therefore possible to trace both sacred architectural history and the development of a local monument.

Castle History with an Important Restriction

Jirny Castle was built between 1844 and 1847 on the remains of the Old Castle. The two-story building has a tower, gables, and battlements, making it a distinctive part of the town’s history. For your planning, it is important to note that Jirny Castle is closed to the public. It should therefore not be planned as a regularly accessible excursion destination. The “Naučná jirenská stezka” educational trail offers another way to explore Jirny.
