Cultural Monuments and Castle History

Brandýs nad Labem Castle is an important Renaissance building with preserved sgraffiti. Sgraffiti are pictorial or ornamental surfaces carved into plaster. It was a popular summer residence of Emperor Rudolf II and has held the title of a national cultural monument since 2017. Castle admission tickets include all-day admission to the park with labyrinths. This makes it possible to combine a castle visit with the park. In Stará Boleslav, the churches of St. Wenceslas and St. Clement are designated national cultural monuments. Inside the Church of St. Clement, Romanesque wall paintings with scenes from the legend of St. Clement have been preserved. The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady and its ambulatories are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for sightseeing and private prayer during the published 2026 operating period. Ambulatories are the passageways surrounding a basilica. The Jewish Cemetery offers further historical insights. It was established in 1568 and expanded several times, most recently at the end of the 19th century. The cemetery contains 915 gravestones dating from 1572 to 1942. At the Arnoldinovský House, a permanent exhibition presents the Brandýs region in a mosaic-like way, complementing the individual buildings with a regional perspective.

Nature, Water and Special Activities

Hluchov, a fragment of a floodplain forest, lies between Brandýs nad Labem and Stará Boleslav. The area has been specially protected as a nature monument since 1995. It preserves the typical flora and fauna of a floodplain forest, as well as communities of organisms found in the floodplains of major rivers. A floodplain forest is a forest in a river floodplain. Proboštský Pond is used as a natural swimming area. The Svatý Václav boat offers another perspective on the surroundings: it carries bicycles and prams, and dogs are also allowed on board. This specific equipment is particularly relevant if you are travelling with a pram, bicycle or dog. The free mobile escape game “Boleslav I. – od vraždy k moci” begins at the Basilica of St. Wenceslas. The Brandýská Katovna is partially open to the public. The Renaissance building, probably constructed in the 16th century, has preserved sgraffito decoration; its interior houses an exhibition about criminal and torture law and the work of the executioner.
