Nové Jirny: Chapels, Vidrholec and Local Traditions

Nové Jirny combines distinctive testimonies to local culture with a landscape that takes on a significance all of its own beyond the village district. On the village square stands the Neoclassical Chapel of Saint Rosalia, dating from 1872. In the forest of Nové Jirny, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary awaits you as another special site: it was built in 1914 at a place called “V zadních dubinách” and has a small bell tower. The village square and the forest create two different focal points. Exploring the area thus reveals different forms of religious architecture situated in two distinct landscapes.

Chapels and Traces of Local Life

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built by members of the Jirny Beautification Association. The small bell tower adds a distinctive architectural detail to the forest setting. In addition to its location in the forest, this connection also links the small structure to the local community. A different culture of remembrance is embodied by the Saint Hubertus Monument in Nové Jirny. It commemorates Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of beaters and hunters. The monument is located along the connecting path across a meadow towards Jirny. Its location along the connecting path establishes a link to the neighboring village of Jirny.

The Vidrholec Biocenter beyond Nové Jirny

Beyond Nové Jirny lies the NRBC 5 – Vidrholec Biocenter. It is a functioning biocenter covering an area of 1,000 hectares. The Cyrilov Nature Reserve belongs to this area. Its protected features include purple moor-grass and bilberry oak forests, variable birch populations, the floodplain ecotype of hornbeam, as well as old oaks and pines. The size of the area gives the biocenter a large-scale character, while its various protected features describe several natural landscapes. Those who wish to combine nature observation with culture will find a clear contrast here to the village square and the chapels.

Traditions and Events in the Village

The community life of the village is also part of the image of Nové Jirny. On November 26, 2022, a Christmas tree lighting ceremony was held. On November 30, 2024, the Christmas tree on the village square beneath the chapel was illuminated. A traditional Children's Day was also held every year on the meadow in Nové Jirny, including on June 8, 2024. These dates represent different aspects of the village: festive gatherings on the village square and an outdoor event on the meadow. The village square and the meadow thus form two different settings for community life. All three events are past events in the life of the village.
