Předboj – Archaeology, Monuments and Recreation
Předboj combines impressive traces of the past with a peaceful place for recreation and an unusually deep archaeological history. Between monuments, traces of ancient settlements, geological evidence and the Velký předbojský rybník, you will discover a place that combines cultural interest with relaxing days.
Monuments and History in Předboj
The Husův pomník commemorates Jan Hus. It was erected in 1915 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the burning of Jan Hus. A new relief with a portrait of Jan Hus was installed in 2021 after the original relief was stolen in 2015. This makes the monument one of the visible historical points of reference in the village, whose significance continues to be reflected in more recent changes.
The Tvrz in Předboj plays a special role. It probably originated in the 14th century and was first mentioned in writing in 1383. Since 1958, it has been registered as a cultural monument under number 46191/2-4143. However, the last remains were destroyed in 1996 during the reconstruction of the buildings of the former farmstead. The Tvrz nevertheless remains important for understanding the village, because its long history is particularly clearly reflected in it.
Předboj is also classified as an important archaeological site in category ÚAN I. Archaeological finds in the western part of the village, along a stream flowing through Předboj and near the former Tvrz, attest to settlement as early as the hillfort period. Those interested in early settlement history will therefore find more here than individual historic buildings.
Small Structures and Geological Discoveries
At the edge of Předboj in the direction of Prague stands the Kaplička, a niche chapel dating from around 1800. Another distinctive point of reference is the Křížek, which was erected in 1864 immediately next to the Zvonička. The Zvonička and the Křížek were fully restored in 2021 as part of the park redesign; a new bell was also installed in the Zvonička.
The landscape also tells of a much more ancient past. The fossil-rich Korycany layers in Předboj were formed from deposits of a former shallow sea during the Cretaceous period. A fossil found in the cadastral area of Předboj is estimated to be 88 million years old. Alongside its settlement and monument history, these geological clues give the village another, surprisingly early layer of history.
For a more peaceful break, the Velký předbojský rybník is a popular recreational destination in Předboj. In addition, the Sportovní areál Západní Stráň is a modern public space that combines sport, recreation and relaxation. This allows you to vary your days between historic discoveries and less formal time outdoors.
Předboj as a Destination for Your Travel Planning
If you are looking for accommodation in Předboj, you can choose the village according to your preferred focus: the monuments and archaeological themes appeal to those seeking cultural and historical discoveries, while the pond and public recreational areas offer a different emphasis. Předboj is therefore particularly interesting if you want to experience not just a single attraction, but the combination of local history, geological history and recreation.
