Zvánovice
Cycling and Village History in Zvánovice
Those who wish to discover Zvánovice by bicycle choose an active focus. For a visit centered on cultural history, the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, the village squares, and the monuments are the main points of interest. Before Christmas Eve, a seasonal tradition is added: In the area around the chapel and the lime trees, people regularly meet to listen to Christmas carols and warm themselves with hot drinks. This makes the cycling route, village history, and pre-Christmas gathering distinct focuses for visitors.
Cycling Route 0023 “Krajem Josefa Lady”
The marked cycling route 0023 “Krajem Josefa Lady” runs through the cadastral area of Zvánovice. It is part of the transregional Greenway main route from Prague to Vienna and is also a 76.3-kilometer circular route. Those who choose cycling as their main theme can therefore follow a circular route integrated into a transregional network with a fixed overall length. The cycling focus is on the route, while the cultural focus is tied to individual places in the village.
Stream and Hiking Trail
The Zvánovický stream is part of Zvánovice’s natural surroundings. It rises near Habr, flows toward Propast, and forms much of the boundary between the cadastral areas of Černé Voděrady and Zvánovice. In the immediate vicinity of the destination, a green hiking trail from the road between Zvánovice and Černé Voděrady reaches the Zvánovický stream after approximately 100–150 meters. The hiking trail thus establishes a different spatial connection than the circular route: the focus is on the stream and the boundary line.
Chapel and Heritage Protection
The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk was consecrated on May 4, 1837. It stands on the site where a wooden bell tower had stood since time immemorial. The chapel and the defined plot of land are protected as monuments. The protection therefore applies not only to the building but also to the associated grounds.
Village Squares and Memorial Sites
On the lower village square of Zvánovice stands the stone ornamental cross, which was fully restored in 2022. A monument erected in 1922 on the village square by the school also commemorates the residents who fell in the First World War. The two squares represent different historical emphases: the restored ornamental cross stands on the lower village square, while the memorial to the fallen residents is located by the school.
Traditions with a Local Character
A regular gathering in the area around the chapel and the lime trees is a focus for a pre-Christmas visit. Before Christmas Eve, people meet there to listen to Christmas carols and warm themselves with hot drinks. This custom differs from the cycling and cultural themes through its seasonal occasion. Charcoal has been produced in this wooded region since time immemorial. Alongside the chapel, cross, and monument, a regional craft tradition is therefore also one of the themes that characterize Zvánovice.
