Discover Žernovka

Žernovka combines village history, granite and nature-oriented discoveries within a small area. You can experience the village particularly vividly on the NS Mukařov-Žernovka educational trail, which ends at the fire station and children's playground in Žernovka. There is also an unusual bell tower by the village pond, historic boundary stones in the forest and a cycling connection between Prague and Brno. Depending on your interests, you can therefore combine your stay with a short educational trail, cultural traces or a cycling tour through the landscape.

Educational trail ending in Žernovka

The NS Mukařov-Žernovka educational trail is approximately 1.5 kilometres long. The entire route is accessible to pedestrians and pushchairs. Cyclists can also use it, provided they exercise appropriate caution with regard to traffic. The destination is particularly noteworthy for an outing with children: The educational trail ends at the fire station and children's playground in Žernovka. The route therefore leads not only through the landscape, but also has a clear finish within the village.

The local stations also include the control point at Jezírko in Žernovka. Since 1994, firefighters from Mukařov or Žernovka have been responsible for looking after it. This connection with the local fire service adds a concrete insight into a recurring part of village life to the educational trail.

Granite shapes the village and its history

Žernovka was founded as a stonecutters' village. Granite is still mined in some local quarries today, so the natural stone is not only part of the village's history but remains associated with Žernovka. A unique granite bell tower stands beside the pond on the village square. Its location by the water makes it a distinctive landmark within the village.

The history of the bell tower can also be read in a renewed inscription: To mark its centenary, the bell or bell tower by the pond in Žernovka received a renewed inscription. Together with the granite mining and the village's foundation as a stonecutters' settlement, this creates a clearly recognisable local focus that points beyond a mere attraction.

Forest, boundary stones and cycle routes

The forest in the direction of Doubek is called “V hranicích”. It is particularly popular with mushroom pickers. Granite boundary stones are still found there today; these stones once divided estates. A walk through this forest therefore brings together a still discoverable trace made of granite and historical significance. The name “V hranicích” also points to the distinctive character of this section of forest.

For cycling trips, cycle route 0022 passes through Žernovka. There, it branches off from cycle route 1 between Prague and Brno. Anyone wishing to explore the village by bicycle will thus find, alongside the educational trail, another documented connection through Žernovka. The original name of the Kutnohorské stezky was “Zelená cesta” – this historic name is also part of the local history of the routes.

Places of remembrance in the village

The cultural character of Žernovka also includes two monuments: one to Abbot Arnošt Vykoukal and one to those who fell in the First World War. Together with the bell tower, pond and traces of the stonecutters' village, they reveal different historical layers of the settlement. In this way, you can get to know Žernovka not only as a starting point for a route, but also as a village with its own history and clearly defined local points of reference.
