Louňovice brings together traces of local history and a distinctive natural feature: the Voděradské bučiny Nature Reserve includes the municipality and protects an extensive beech forest. There is also an open-air museum dedicated to the stoneworking tradition, as well as trails with different themes. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to start with the history of the village or the forest area.

Local History and the Stoneworking Tradition

The Stezka historií Louňovic (Louňovice History Trail) opened as part of celebrations marking the 600th anniversary of the first written mention of Louňovice. This historical circular trail makes the village’s history the starting point for a visit. If you are interested in local traditions, the Kamenický skanzen also offers an insight into the history of granite quarrying and stoneworking in Louňovice and the surrounding villages. This historical connection was a good reason to establish the open-air museum.

The exhibits at the Kamenický skanzen include items donated by local residents, as well as loans from the Muzeum Vysočiny v Jihlavě (Vysočina Museum in Jihlava). There is another link to the history of stone just beyond the municipal boundary: Lom Kaménka is connected with the foundation stone of Prague’s National Theatre, the Národní divadlo. Together, these offer different perspectives on the subject—from local craftsmanship and museum exhibits to this link with a well-known Prague building.

Voděradské bučiny: Nature and Trails

Voděradské bučiny is a national nature reserve that includes Louňovice and protects an extensive beech forest. For nature enthusiasts, the area offers a different focus from the village history trail: here, the protected forest takes centre stage. The area is easily accessible to cyclists and is crisscrossed by numerous cycling and hiking trails. The numbered cycling routes include 1, 0023, 0024, 0031 and 0085.

Voděradské bučiny can be reached from Praha-Háje on regular suburban bus routes 381, 382 and 387. If you are planning to use this connection to get there, check the timetable before your visit.

Two Educational Trails, Different Distances

The stated distances and number of stops can help you choose a trail. The Stezka historií Louňovic is 6.3 kilometres long and has eight stops. You can shorten it to less than two kilometres by skipping the fifth stop. The Naučná stezka Voděradské bučiny (Voděradské bučiny Educational Trail) is eight kilometres long and also has eight educational stops. The trails therefore differ in both length and theme: one covers the history of Louňovice, the other the Voděradské bučiny forest. The shorter version of the history trail also offers a substantially shorter route option.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

For a cultural and historical focus, choose the trail through the history of Louňovice and the Kamenický skanzen, with its exhibits on stoneworking. If you would rather spend time in the forest, Voděradské bučiny, its hiking trails and its numbered cycling routes offer a different theme. The lengths of the two educational trails also provide a concrete comparison for planning: 6.3 kilometres, with a shorter option, on the Stezka historií Louňovic, or eight kilometres on the Naučná stezka Voděradské bučiny. This lets you tailor your trip to the balance of local history and nature you want, without treating the two trails as the same.
